Braves vs Yankees Pick, Betting Analysis
The first two games of the Yankees and Braves series have been total pitcher duels. To be fair, most Yankees games have gone that way of late due to their offensive struggles.
That’s why I’m targeting a prop for Sunday’s series finale that goes against the Yankees offense.
No team in the league has been more strikeout-prone than the Yankees since July 1st, punching out 26.9% of the time. Striking out isn’t the only issue for New York, who ranks 26th with an 81 wRC+ in that span.
The strikeouts are what I’m paying attention to for this bet, though.
The real enticing part about betting the over on Grant Holmes’s strikeouts is that the Yankees can make non-strikeout pitchers look like prime Jacob deGrom. For instance, Tyler Mahle in his first Braves outing punched out nine Yankee hitters on Friday.
The only hitters in the Yankees order who don’t strike out close to 25% of the time are the newly-acquired Luis Garcia Jr., (16%) and Trent Grisham (16%).
Holmes will have plenty of chances to obtain strikeouts against Spencer Jones (37% K rate), Jazz Chisholm (31%), Ryan McMahon (29%), Heliot Ramos (26%), Ali Sanchez (25%), and Ben Rice (25%). Six of the nine likely hitters in the Yankees Sunday lineup punch out a quarter of the time or worse! Holmes should be salivating at the thought of sending these hitters down via the strikeout.
As for Holmes, it’s been a mixed bag this year. Entering the year, Holmes needed to stay healthy since other Braves starters tend to get injured. He’s done just that, taking the ball 22 times, pitching to a 3.67 ERA with a 4.67 xERA and 4.91 FIP. Holmes also features a 7.67 K/9, down from 9.63 last season.
If Holmes can give the Braves a strong five innings as usual, I expect him to reach the 5-6 strikeout threshold needed to secure a winner in the Bronx.
Pick: Grant Holmes Over strikeouts (play to 6)
