Red Sox vs Yankees MLB Betting Preview
The Red Sox will give the ball to their "Ace" Ranger Suarez in the series finale. He's had a solid debut year with the Red Sox, posting a 3.35 ERA, a 3.61 xERA, and a 2.96 FIP.
One interesting tidbit about Suarez is that he isn't giving Boston much length. He hasn't gone more than 5 1/3 innings in any of his five starts since returning from the IL. Suarez is still one of the league's best at generating weak contact, ranking in the 87th percentile or better in hard-hit rate, barrel rate, and average exit velocity.
Oddly, Suarez has reverse splits this season. In past years, he was a pretty even-splits guy, but putting away lefties has been a real obstacle for the veteran hurler this year. Left-handed hitters have a.795 OPS against Suarez compared to righties, who have a .590. He's only given up three homers against lefties, but they have a .275 batting average and .346 OBP against Suarez. Perhaps some BABIP unluckiness? Maybe, but that's the risk with not striking out hitters and being a contact pitcher.
In August, the Red Sox lineup has remained on a torrid pace, leading the league with a 122 wRC+. However, they scored one or fewer runs in three of their past four games, indicating a possible downward trend.
Is Boston truly one of the top offenses in the league? The numbers say yes over a multi-month sample, but I'm less bullish. Just how long can Caleb Durbin, Mickey Gasper, Anthony Seigler, Nick Sogard, and Andruw Monasterio be legitimate 100+ wRC+ hitters? Four of these are everyday players who have expected numbers vastly worse than their real numbers. To me, they'll come back down to earth as they get more exposure to big-league arms.
The one thing the Red Sox can hang their hat on is their bullpen, which is arguably the best in the league. Tossing the ball to Garrett Whitlock in the 8th and Aroldis Chapman in the 9th is a dream for any manager. Not to mention, Tyron Guerrero is pumping up to 103 mph in key leverage spots, and Erik Miller has been a top arm in the league since coming to Boston.
If the Yankees want to win, it'll need to have the lead early.
Tasked with holding down this Boston lineup is Will Warren, who got more life in this Yankees rotation due to injuries. First, Max Fried went on the IL for two weeks, and he returned on Saturday. Then, Ryan Weathers went on the IL with an unspecified timetable, which means Warren is there to stay.
Warren is solid, but not great. He has a 4.39 ERA with a 4.60 xERA and a 4.30 FIP. The issue for Warren is home run woes; he gives up an astounding 1.42 HR/9 and gave up four in his last three starts.
His under-the-hood numbers don't give much optimism, either. He ranks in the 8th percentile in hard-hit rate and 4th in average exit velocity. Sometimes, the issue with back-of-the-rotation pitchers is that they don't have good enough stuff to survive in the bigs. Warren is different. His Stuff+ is 103, which is solid for a fourth or fifth arm. He just makes a few mistakes that can totally derail an outing due to his home run problems.
The Yankees offense has some shaky numbers in August, ranking 24th in wRC+ heading into Saturday. I hate to sound like an old-school baseball person by saying "putting the ball in play matters", but for the Yankees, it does when Aaron Judge is out. They lack the top-of-the-league power output they have with Judge, so putting the ball in play and limiting strikeouts is key.
In August, they had the league's worst 26% strikeout rate and are hitting just .218. However, with Cody Bellinger back and Luis Garcia Jr. getting hot, that gives New York two elite bat-to-ball hitters at the top of the order. That also relieves some pressure on Ben Rice, who's hitting .333 in his past seven games after struggling for the past month.
I see the vision for the Yankees offense getting on track, even with Judge still out.
The line gives the Red Sox a slight edge on the road, but I want to take the Yankees in the Bronx. The gap between these two clubs isn't very big — and the oddsmakers must be ignoring Suarez's recent outings because he's priced like an ace.
With New York's lefty-heavy lineup and reverse splits, I could see it succeeding against Boston's highly-paid southpaw.
Take the underdog at home.
