Reds vs Dodgers MLB Betting Preview

Yamamoto draws about as favorable a strikeout matchup as you'll find down the stretch. He's sitting on a 2.67 ERA and 161 strikeouts across 165 innings (8.8 K/9) this season, and he's been trending up, not down.

In his last two turns through the rotation: eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings in a hard-luck loss to Atlanta, then eight more over seven innings in his last start against St. Louis, a start where he carried a no-hitter into the sixth before a couple of late homers dented the box score.

The stuff and swing-and-miss ability haven't wavered even as the results have bounced around a little; he's punched out at least seven in three straight outings now, and he's doing it efficiently enough to consistently work into the seventh inning, which matters for a counting stat like this one.

The Reds lineup he's facing is about as favorable a strikeout matchup as exists in the league right now. Cincinnati is running a 25.2% strikeout rate as a team, and their offense has been buried in one of its worst extended stretches in decades, hitting .230 with a .707 OPS on the season.

This isn't a lineup that grinds out at-bats or works counts; it's a unit that's been overmatched against good stuff all year, and Yamamoto's fastball-splitter-curveball mix is exactly the kind of swing-and-miss arsenal that group has struggled with.

Dodger Stadium adds a little more helium too, grading out as a slightly pitcher-friendly park (0.98 factor), and with Rhett Lowder and a shaky Reds bullpen on the other side, there's no obvious game-flow reason for the Dodgers to pull Yamamoto early.

Book price of -105 undersells the gap here. Between the recent strikeout trend (16 combined over his last two starts), a Reds lineup that chases and whiffs at one of the highest rates in baseball, and a full workload expected against a lesser Cincinnati arm.

The profile of this matchup lines up cleanly with the 8.7 projection, comfortably clear of the 7.5 number at a price that isn't charging much for it.

Pick: Yoshinobu Yamamoto Over 7.5 Strikeouts (-105, bet365)
