Doug Ziefel’s Guardians vs Astros Preview
The Cleveland Guardians come into this series ice cold and have lost 10 straight. They've struggled mightily at the plate, and that's due to continue tonight against Houston's Colton Gordon.
The Guardians have had more than their fair share of issues with lefties; they rank 28th in wRC+ and 30th in OPS against them. To make matters worse, Gordon is an emerging young arm who's due for positive regression.
Through nine big league starts, Gordon has displayed impeccable command, but he doesn't miss many bats. However, his hard-hit rate is in the 67th percentile, so he's due to see his BABIP come down, especially against a lineup that's last in hard-hit rate.
The Astros have been trending upward, going 8-2 over their past 10 games, and have begun to take over the AL West.
Their lineup has spurred their most recent hot streak, as they hold the second-highest wRC+ over the last two weeks.
What's even more impressive about their production lately is that they're doing it without Jeremy Pena and Yordan Alvarez. We've seen the likes of Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith step up and support veterans Jose Altuve and Christian Walker.
Tonight, they get to face Cleveland's Tanner Bibee. Bibee has been solid for the Guardians this season and, like his counterpart, he enters this outing due for positive regression.
However, a drop-off in strikeouts this season has been the issue for Bibee, and the way the Astros have been swinging the bats, balls in play are bound to find some grass.
Guardians vs Astros Prediction, Betting Analysis
This series is a matchup of two teams trending in the opposite direction. The Guardians have been horrid at the plate and have a sneaky tough matchup in front of them.
On the other side, the Astros have been cruising offensively and show no signs of slowing down.
With both bullpens taxed from the weekend, I'm taking them out of the equation by backing Houston on the run line in the first five.
Pick: Astros F5 -0.5 (-105, BetMGM)
Moneyline
The Astros are the side here, but the run line offers more value.
Run Line (Spread)
Take the Astros on the first five run line.
Over/Under
I have no play on the total.
