Tigers vs Yankees MLB Betting Preview
Former No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize continues to struggle staying healthy, an issue that has plagued most of his career. He has already made two stops to the injured list this season but is ready to make his 12th start of the year on Monday. When Mize has been on the mound this season, he has been great.
Entering Monday, Mize sports a 2.95 ERA and has a career-best 9.00 K/9 rate. Arm injuries have cost Mize some of his velocity, but he still gets by limiting hard contact and walks. His outing last week against New York did not go great, so he will look to improve on that.
After a dreadful May where they looked like one of the league's worst offenses, the Tigers have exploded at the plate in June. Detroit has clubbed 44 home runs this month, the most of any team, and it sits fifth in team OPS over this stretch.
Dillon Dingler is having a breakout season behind the plate, with rookie Kevin McGonigle and star outfielder Riley Greene also leading the way. Kerry Carpenter, returning from the injured list, has also really helped this team’s turnaround at the plate.
The Yankees are coming off a disastrous week, ending with a four-game mopping in Boston. They will tuck their tail between their legs and return home to the Bronx looking to stop the bleeding with Ryan Weathers on the mound. Weathers was selected early in that same first round as Mize, going just six picks later at No. 7 overall.
Weathers has been solid at the backend of the Yankees rotation in his first season with New York. He has a 3.95 ERA through 15 starts, although his 4.50 xERA is a bit concerning. Weathers has a lethal sweeper that has helped him produce a career-best strikeout rate, but his fastball continues to get hammered. He has already cut his four-seam usage nearly in half in favor of his sinker, but he might need to keep limiting it.
New York continues to try and fill the Aaron Judge-sized hole in their lineup. They have Ben Rice crushing right-handed pitching and Paul Goldschmidt crushing lefties, but as they saw this week, the lineup is super thin after that, especially when Cody Bellinger isn’t hitting too.
The bottom of the order is essentially free outs for opponents right now and has caused the Yankees to slide to 19th in runs and 23rd in team OPS since Judge hit the injured list.

Tigers vs Yankees Pick, Betting Analysis
A pair of top 10 picks in 2018, that have largely failed to live up to expectations, will square off on Monday in the Bronx. These teams just faced each other last week in Detroit, with the Yankees winning 2-1 before the wheels fell off in Boston.
In that series, the Yankees saw Mize and the Tigers saw Weathers. Weathers had much more success than Mize did in that series, but I’m picking things to flip this time. Mize has posted a 2.95 ERA this season, and most of his numbers are career-bests at the moment. He is striking hitters out at a career-best rate and continues to limit walks and hard contact. His fastball has been terrific, and his splitter is his strongest pitch.
Mize also has reverse splits as a right-handed pitcher, having much more success against lefties. Left-handed hitters are batting just .174 against him with a .479 OPS. That should allow him to neutralize Rice, Bellinger, and Chisholm at the top of this Yankees lineup.
Weathers has been solid for New York, but his 4.50 xERA is a major concern, and teams have an 11.7% barrel rate against him this season, one of the worst marks in the league.
Home runs have been a major concern for Weathers. He has already allowed 16 long balls on the year and has the fifth-highest HR/9 rate among starting pitchers. That could spell trouble against the team that is red hot at the plate and has hit more home runs than any team in baseball this month.
Sure, you have a highly motivated and pissed off Yankees team returning home after getting swept by their biggest rival on national television. But if you back Detroit here, you are getting the better starting pitcher in Mize over Weathers. And it is hard to argue against the Tigers' offense being in better form than New York’s right now, given how these two teams are playing heading into Monday. And you’re getting Detroit at plus money.
Pick: Detroit +125 (Play to +110)
