Houston Astros Betting Preview

A 3-6 homestand brought sweeping changes in Houston: the team mutually parted ways with general manager Dana Brown. Manager Joe Espada is also not expected to return next season, but he will finish out the season. Despite their home struggles, the Astros did not lose much ground in the AL West.

In fact, they moved back into first place last night as the White Sox jumped all over Jacob DeGrom and the Astros defeated the Yankees 9-7 in the series opener.

Yordan Alvarez went 3-for-5 and put Houston in front with a triple in the eighth inning, which was his first in two years.

Hitting .323 with 36 home runs, 91 runs batted in, and a 1.055 OPS, Alvarez is on pace to win the first AL Triple Crown since Miguel Cabrera. With reigning AL MVPAaron Judge on the IL since early June, Alvarez is the heavy favorite to claim his first AL MVP.

Peter Lambert will get the start for the Astros, and he will be looking to bounce back from his worst outing of the season as he allowed nine earned runs on eight hits in 3 and 2/3 innings. The blow-up outing brought his ERA up to 3.68, but he still has been the Astros' most dependable starter this season, making 22 starts and pitching 122 and 1/3 innings.

His first year with the Astros has been much better than his Rockies tenure, with 2.8 WAR this season after -11 WAR and a 6.28 ERA with the Rockies.

New York Yankees Betting Preview

If you like offense, Yankees' games have not been for you. They lead the MLB with a 3.24 team ERA, with a rotation anchored by AL Cy Young favorite Cam Schlittler, 2023 Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole, and Max Fried.

However, since June, the Yankees have averaged 3.9 runs per game, with Judge's last appearance in the lineup on May 31st. That has led to a lot of low-scoring games, which made last night's game a rarity both in that it had 16 runs and that the Yankees lost.

When scoring five or more runs, the Yankees are 45-6 (.882) and have the second-best winning percentage in the MLB this season. That also means 80 games of scoring four runs or less and slow starts have been a contributing factor.

New York has not scored in the first inning in 23 straight games. If they don't do it tonight, they will tie the longest scoreless first inning in franchise history.

George Lombard Jr. may have the best skill set on the roster for a leadoff hitter with his combination of power and speed. However, just 18 games into his career, the Yankees do not want to put that responsibility on him yet.

Instead, Trent Grisham has been the primary leadoff hitter this season, usually resulting in an out to start the game. When leading off in the first inning this season, Grisham has reached base in just 19 of 77 plate appearances and has a .438 OPS.

Though Grisham has struggled leading off, he has delivered several clutch hits late in games. He has 13 home runs, 47 RBI, and a .845 OPS while playing in 66 of the Yankees' wins this season. Meanwhile, trade deadline acquisition Luis Garcia has started to find his stride in pinstripes as he has homered in three of his last five games. He is +410 for another home run today.

After the Yankees placed Ryan Weathers on the IL following his start on Saturday, manager Aaron Boone shuffled the rotation a bit to give the others an extra day, with a four-game set with the rival Red Sox ahead.

Elmer Rodriguez will get the ball in his fifth career start. A top 100 prospect entering this year, Rodriguez had a 2.59 ERA in Triple-A, though that success has not yet followed him to the majors.

Rodriguez has to get through five innings in any of his starts, and he has issued 11 walks in 17 frames. With Will Warren lasting only five innings yesterday, it may be a taxing night on the Yankees' bullpen.

Astros vs Yankees Pick, Betting Analysis

While walks have been an issue for Rodriguez, he has not countered them with strikeouts, as he has just 10 in four starts.

Rodriguez has just a 12% strikeout rate and 22.2% chase rate. As a result, he has failed to reach four strikeouts in three of his starts and now faces an Astros team that ranks 19th in strikeout rate.

If he has another outing with four innings or less, it will be difficult for him to get four punchouts tonight.

Pick: Elmer Rodriguez Under 3.5 Strikeouts (+106, DraftKings)
