Dodgers vs Cubs MLB Betting Preview
While the Dodgers are hogging all the off-field headlines as the trade deadline approaches, on the field Los Angeles was just swept by the Boston Red Sox and now heads to Chicago looking to regroup.
It is easy for Justin Wrobleski to get lost in this Dodgers rotation, but he has very quietly posted an 11-2 record with a 2.88 ERA on his way to an All-Star selection. Wrobleski eats innings, completing at least six frames in 14 of his 17 starts this season. He faced the Cubs earlier this season and tossed six scoreless innings.
Perhaps the reason Wrobleski doesn’t get talked about more, though (besides the other names on this roster), is the glaring red flag on his profile. His 2.88 ERA looks terrific, but his 4.30 xERA does not. Wrobleski has gotten great results for sure; I’m just not sure how.
He ranks in the bottom third of the league in strikeout rate and is in the bottom 20% in hard-hit rate allowed. The only thing Wrobleski actually does at an above-average level is limit walks. None of that takes away from what he has done so far this season; it’s just a bit of concern moving forward.
Offensively, the Dodgers are the Dodgers. They have the deepest lineup in the sport. LA currently sits third in runs scored and has the best team OPS in the league. The Dodgers sit near the top of the leaderboard in nearly every category, showing a balance to draw walks, get on base, and provide plenty of power.
Shohei Ohtani continues to hit at an MVP level while Freddie Freeman continues to defy time. Andy Pages is having a breakout season for the Dodgers, and Max Muncy goes on streaks where he is the best hitter in the world. If there is one flaw in this lineup, they might need Mookie Betts and Kyle Tucker to regain their old form if they want to win a third-straight World Series title.
Matthew Boyd started his career as nothing more than a back-end starter with the Detroit Tigers but has really reinvented himself since joining the Cubs last season. He broke out and became the ace of this staff with a 3.21 ERA and earned his first All-Star selection.
This year, Boyd has battled injuries and has only 12 starts, but he is 6-1 with a 3.41 ERA in those outings. He has been brilliant since returning from the IL, posting a 1.67 ERA in his last five starts and allowing one run or fewer in three straight games. Boyd relies on a deceptive arm angle and release point, as well as great command of his pitch mix.
Chicago was expected to be one of the league’s strongest contenders, and they have really looked the part recently. It has been an up-and-down season offensively, though. They started the season blazing hot before cooling off into a slump. However, they have since rebounded and are crushing the ball again. Overall, the Cubs sit fourth in the league in scoring. They rank second in on-base percentage, thanks in large part to drawing more walks than any other team by a wide margin.
Everything in Chicago right now starts and ends with Pete Crow-Armstrong. He is perhaps the most must-watch player in the league, and with a .921 OPS, he is a legitimate MVP candidate in the National League and likely the biggest competition to Ohtani. Seiya Suzuki has been the next most consistent bat all season, but the biggest reason for the recent success is that Alex Bregman and Nico Hoerner have finally found their stroke at the plate.

Dodgers vs Cubs Pick, Betting Analysis
With Bregman and Hoerner finally coming along and Crow-Armstrong hitting as well, anybody in the league right now, this Cubs lineup can go toe-to-toe with the Dodgers. Over the last two weeks, five players on Chicago have an OPS over .800. Los Angeles has four, and one of them (Dalton Rushing) might be hurt.
Wrobleski has been overperforming all season, and this red-hot Cubs lineup is seeing him for the second time, in much better form than at their last meeting. Wrobleski doesn’t strike out many hitters and has been hit hard this season. The Cubs are poised to take advantage of that with their speed and ability to make things happen on the base paths.
The biggest strength for Wrobleski is his command and ability to limit free passes, but Chicago is more patient at the plate and draws more walks than any team. If any lineup can squeeze out a free pass or walk the count against Wrobleski, it’s the Cubs. He issues four walks against them earlier in the season, the most of his career.
Narratively, there is a lot surrounding this game. On the one hand, it is very easy to look at the Dodgers, coming off a sweep, and think there is no way they lose four straight games. Betting on a motivated Dodgers squad is certainly very appetizing.
But you also have the Dodgers flying halfway across the country from LA to Chicago, while the Cubs remain home. You also have the Dodgers possibly looking ahead to tomorrow, where Tarik Skubal will make his LA debut.
You also have Wrobleski having to compose himself after being the subject of trade talks all week, who wasn’t even announced as the starter until the last minute because the Dodgers weren’t sure if he would still be on the team.
All this to say, the narratives work both ways. I think the off-the-field stuff is probably even on both sides; the pitchers are probably closer to even than surface-level might suggest given the concerns around Wrobleski, and the lineups are even given how well the Cubs are playing right now. This game on Monday is pretty much a coin flip, so that provides some value on the Cubs at +110 or better.
