Dodgers vs Phillies Betting Preview
The Dodgers came out of the All-Star break with a series win against the Yankees and now head down to Philadelphia for a three-game set in the City of Brotherly Love.
Emmet Sheehan will kick the series off, making his 18th start on the year. With guys like Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow spending most of the season on the injured list, Sheehan has become a mainstay in this L.A. rotation.
The results have not been great for Sheehan, but expected indicators seem to hint that improvement could be on the way in the second half.
Sheehan entered the break with a 4.81 ERA but a 3.91 xERA. He has good strikeout upside but tends to leave things over the plate at times. He has already allowed 15 home runs on the year and has a high barrel rate allowed.
Offensively, what even needs to be said about this Dodgers lineup? They are very good. Los Angeles is third in scoring on the year and has the best team OPS. They get on base, they hit for power, and they have the most depth of any team in baseball.
Shohei Ohtani continues to run away with the MVP Award in the National League, while Freddie Freeman continues to defy time and consistently get the job done.
Andy Pages is having a breakout season at the top of the order, and Max Muncy is probably the most underrated player in the league who just gets lost in the shuffle of this lineup.
Cristopher Sanchez wrapped up the first half of the season a little shakier than we have come to expect from him.
After a nearly flawless 2+ months, Sanchez allowed at least four runs in three of his final six starts to close out the year, including a disastrous nine-run outing in Kansas City. He also did not pitch well in the Midseason Classic, allowing three runs in the first inning to ultimately cost the NL the game.
Now the question becomes: is there a reason for concern there? Or do we trust the larger sample size of Sanchez’s success? He still holds a 2.62 ERA, good for sixth in the league, and is top five in strikeouts.
Sanchez has one of the best chase rates and ground-ball rates in the league, a lethal combination. He is also pitching at home on Monday, where he has been nearly perfect.
Philadelphia has improved offensively after this mid-season coaching change; however, they still have a consistency issue. The Phillies only rank 19th in runs scored this season and 24th in team OPS.
The lineup is extremely reliant on the four bats at the top of the order.
Trea Turner has been underwhelming, but Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh are all having phenomenal seasons. Schwarber leads the league in home runs and March is having a breakout season and earned a starting spot at the All-Star Game.

Dodgers vs Phillies MLB Pick, Best Bet
All-Star Game aside, Sanchez has been nearly perfect at Citizens Bank Park this season. He's 7-1 in 11 starts at home with a minuscule 0.86 ERA.
In 73 innings at home this season, Sanchez has allowed just seven earned runs while racking up 85 strikeouts.
He has allowed one run or fewer in nine of his 11 starts in Philly and hasn’t allowed more than two in a start at home all season. If Sanchez is going to get his Cy Young campaign back on track, he needs to shut down this Dodgers lineup tonight.
Even if he doesn’t, the Phillies offense is also in a favorable position here. Like Sanchez, this entire lineup has been much better when playing on Broad Street.
The Phillies have averaged 4.8 runs per game with a team OPS of .761 at home this season, compared to 3.8 runs per game with a .646 team OPS on the road.
They will also be in their better splits against a right-handed pitcher, where they hold a team OPS over .710. This puts their top bats of Schwarber, Harper, and Marsh at an advantage.
Sheehan might be due for some positive regression, but he still allows way too much hard contact. His fastball runs very flat and tends to remain up in the zone. He throws his fastball 43% of the time and it has allowed a .631 slugging percentage and a 44.7% hard-hit rate to opponents.
Philadelphia’s top bats hammer fastballs, especially Harper and Schwarber. If you like betting player props, don’t be surprised if one of those guys puts one into the seats (I would bet Harper at the price).
While betting the Dodgers is never a bad idea, and getting them as an underdog is extra enticing, I am going to trust Sanchez at home and expect him to get back on track after that shaky end to the first half.
Pick: Phillies ML -135 or Better
- Bonus Pick: Bryce Harper Home Run +330
