Dodgers vs Blue Jays World Series Game 2 Preview
After a brilliant complete-game effort in his last postseason outing, Yoshinobu Yamamoto will look to keep the momentum moving to the World Series.
He has to face a much more difficult Blue Jays lineup in this outing, though.
Yamamoto posted a 2.49 ERA with a 2.93 FIP in his second MLB season. He also struck 10.43 batters per nine innings, but also walked over three batters per nine.
He's nasty. That's not a question. The bigger question is whether Yamamoto benefited from a Brewers squad that was basically a no-show in the NLCS.
I think that's part of it, and the Blue Jays will put up a much more formidable fight.
In terms of offense, the Dodgers had a much better showing against the Brewers than against the Phillies. They had a 124 wRC+ in the NLCS — the second-highest mark among the four LCS teams.
They have no shortage of offensive talent. Shohei Ohtani posted a 313 wRC+ in the NLCS, and Freddie Freeman also posted a 145 wRC+. If that pair and Mookie Betts start to hit, the Dodgers will be tough to beat.
In four NLCS games, Los Angeles struck out at a 24.8% clip and walked at an 11.4% clip. The Dodgers have a brilliant approach, but it looks weak compared to their opponents.
We can discuss the Dodgers' talented offense all day long. But what if the Blue Jays are just… better?
No team executes their approach better than the Toronto Blue Jays, who walked 9% of the time in the ALCS with an unbelievably good 14% strikeout rate.
That approach paid dividends in the sixth inning of game one. Blake Snell allowed two baserunners before Daulton Varsho worked a timely walk to load the bases — and then the Jays offense erupted for a nine-run inning. Many teams would have struck out in the spots where Varsho and Nathan Lukes drew walks, but there's a different aura surrounding this pesky Toronto club.
While the Blue Jays' offense is elite, Kevin Gausman, who serves as Toronto's ace, will need to turn in a strong outing. He was just okay during the regular season — with a 3.59 ERA and 3.41 FIP. But the bright postseason lights have brought the best out of the veteran, allowing four runs in 18 innings over four appearances (three starts).
The key to Gausman turning in a strong outing? Limiting the walks. The Dodgers will likely be more patient versus Gausman and his splitter. He needs to attack with his fastball to make his putaway pitch more effective.

I have to take the Blue Jays.
For one, Toronto is absolutely dominant at home.
Secondly, I think Toronto offers the right approach to combat Yamamoto's elite swing-and-miss stuff.
We saw how much Snell had to work — and Yamamoto won't be any different.
Expect another impressive offensive showing from the Jays as plus money dogs in game two.
