Collin Whitchurch’s Marlins vs Braves Preview

The Fish are 6.5 games out of the Wild Card, but their front office, their fans, their players, and everyone have to be loving this surprise run. The vibes are great.

On the opposite end of the vibes spectrum, the Braves have packed their bags for the season. Despite that, the books are giving Atlanta plenty of respect, too much respect.

On Friday, the Marlins have the better starting pitcher. Edward Cabrera looks like a fringe Cy Young candidate. He’s always had elite stuff, but he’s cut his walk rate down significantly this year. It’s come at the expense of strikeouts, but it’s a reasonable tradeoff for much improved command, especially when he’s keeping the ball in the park more while throwing more innings.

Meanwhile, Braves starter Bryce Elder is essentially a Quad-A starting pitcher. He shouldn’t be in a big league rotation. He’s more of a swingman emergency starter, but the Braves need him to start because their rotation has been devastated by injuries.

Elder will likely struggle to handle the white-hot Fish. The Marlins rank third among MLB lineups in wRC+ against right-handed pitching over the past month (124), with Kyle Stowers establishing himself as a top-five hitter during the stretch (215 wRC+, 11.8% BB, 1.6 fWAR).

Pick: Marlins ML (-135, BetMGM)
