Brewers vs Giants MLB Betting Preview
Brandon Sproat isn't a unique young pitcher; he's getting beaten up just like most others as he adjusts to life at the major-league level. His ERA stands at 5.09 through 86 2/3 innings of his first full season, despite an electric fastball and positive 24.4% strikeout rate.
That doesn't mean things can't improve, and the Brewers right-hander is currently working with a 3.86 ERA this month to follow a 3.46 ERA in June. While the strikeouts have subsided in July, and the walks have returned, Sproat has limited the damage to 11 hits in 11 and 2/3 innings, just two of those being home runs.
Unfortunately, the .259 Expected Batting Average is the worst of his season, and the .425 xSLG is just shy of his worst. He'd done a good job of posting a .235 xBA in May and .200 in June, thanks to an influx of ground balls, but his fly ball rate has shot back up to 29.4% this month, which has led to some issues.
Things may not improve quite so much here against the Giants, either, a team ranked second in OPS to fly-ball pitchers and a team which has hit fly balls at the 12th-highest clip in baseball. At 3.6 points higher than average and increasing, Sproat is squarely a fly-baller, and that will put him in trouble.
There may be something to talk about on the other side of this matchup offensively with the Brewers ranking seventh offensively over the last two weeks, but there's little to champion with the Giants. They sit 23rd in wRC+ over that same span with a very bad 25.7% strikeout rate and weak .164 Isolated Power.
Aside from a big 9-2 win over the Angels this weekend, where San Francisco totaled three doubles and two homers — against Ryan Johnson, of all people — things haven't exactly seemed to be improving, either.
That will put the onus on another fly-ball artist, who comes by the name of Tyler Mahle. The veteran hasn't been a stranger to the home run this season, surrendering 13 of them in 16 starts, but his xBA has been more or less under control at .252 — sitting along with a .402 xSLG, which is five points better than average.
Mahle has been a pitcher you can use in the right spots this season, and he certainly hasn't been the worst option with a decent 21.4% strikeout rate and 9.2% walk rate. This could be one of those spots, too, with the Brewers ranked seven spots higher — in third — versus ground-ball pitchers.
It comes down to just how much you want to roll the dice, but you must know that the righty's last three starts — where he's compiled a 3.86 ERA — have come against the Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Royals.
Considering this is a friendlier park for fly balls, where Mahle's had a 3.00 ERA, you might want to overlook that.

Brewers vs Giants Pick, Betting Analysis
We have two fly-ball pitchers going up against one another here, and while the under could be the play in the end, I am giving a look to the home underdogs.
Sproat theoretically has the better of the two matchups, facing a Giants team which has been one of the worst in the league lately, but that team torches fly-ballers and grades out pretty well against fastballs of all kinds — something he'll be leaning on.
Mahle has probably been the weaker of the two troubled arms by the numbers, and does draw the better of two offenses, but he's been nails at home and should be able to lean on his talented outfield for help here against a Milwaukee team that owns a 99 wRC+ on the road — ranked 13th — and a 111 at home, which sits eighth.
The veteran is trending in the right direction, and I have enough faith here to back him.
