Twins vs Royals MLB Betting Preview
Despite being in the middle of a highly congested AL Wild Card race, the Twins' front office took an aggressive approach at the trade deadline by acquiring A.J. Minter, Jeff Hoffman, and Dean Kremer, though only Minter is a true rental. However, due to their current four-game losing streak, Minnesota's playoff chances are down to 21.6% (per FanGraphs).
Bailey Ober will be facing the Royals for a second consecutive start in this matchup and was fairly effective last time out in allowing four hits and two earned runs across six innings of work.
He has not been overly effective of late, as throughout his last 55 innings of work (10 starts) he's pitched to an ERA of 4.75, with an xERA of 4.69. He's been hard-hit 33% of the time in that span, and allowed an xBA of .255.
With the additions of A.J. Minter and Jeff Hoffman to a bullpen that owns a 3.60 ERA over the last 30 days, Minnesota's relief corps now projects as roughly league average and enters Thursday's matchup well-rested.
While Hoffman's struggles in high-leverage situations drew plenty of attention from Blue Jays fans earlier this season, he has quietly rounded into excellent form, posting a 1.16 ERA, 2.88 xFIP, and 33.1% strikeout rate across his last 23 1/3 innings.
The Twins didn't face Michael Wacha during last week's series in Minnesota, but they tagged the veteran right-hander for eight hits and four earned runs when they met on June 5.
Minnesota has been one of the league's better offenses against right-handed pitching this season, ranking seventh with a 107 wRC+ overall, and a wRC+ of 119 since June 1. However, their upside versus righties is currently reduced with Byron Buxton back on the injured list, as when available he has crushed righties (.912 OPS).
Surprising All-Star Michael Wacha has remained in steady form of late, as throughout his last 10 starts he has pitched to an ERA of 3.86 with an xERA of 4.16 and an xFIP of 4.19.
While Wacha doesn't overpower hitters with velocity and holds fairly average stuff (99 Stuff+ rating), he has pitched to contact effectively and limited free passes.
Kansas City's bullpen has been a disaster this season, with an overall ERA of 5.35 and a shocking 9.00 in high-leverage situations, which is a major reason for the Royals' ugly mark of 48-67.
The unit has remained in comparably poor form of late, as over the last 30 days it ranks 28th with an ERA of 5.92.
The Royals have hit to a wRC+ of 97 versus right-handed pitching overall this season, but after a horrid start have hit to a wRC+ of 104 since June 1st, and hold the highest hard-hit rate in MLB during that span.
Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia are the only two notable position players on the IR; however, neither has been very productive this season.

Twins vs Royals Pick, Betting Analysis
While Wacha does offer an edge over Ober, the gap does not appear wide enough for the Royals to be priced at -119 in this matchup.
Even amid a much more respectable stretch of offensive play from the Royals, Minnesota has been the more productive lineup overall and has handled right-handed pitching effectively this season.
While Ober hasn't been overly convincing, he likely won't be asked to face the order for a third time unless he's cruising with the Twins bullpen offering numerous quality, well-rested arms.
At +111, there looks to be value in backing the underdog Twins to snap their losing skid in this matchup, while it could also be a good spot to target Minnesota around the sixth inning in a potentially close or trailing scoreline.
Pick: Twins ML +111 (DraftKings | Play to +105)
