Kenny Ducey’s Mets vs Dodgers Preview
Tylor Megill is finally beginning to put it together at 29 years old. The right-hander has shot his strikeout rate up over 30% in the early part of the season, and that's really made his journey to induce friendly contact that much easier.
Induce it he has, however. While his pop-up rate still looks unsustainable at nearly 12%, Megill has still found a good balance of ground balls and fly balls and enters play on Tuesday with a .226 Expected Batting Average and .350 Expected Slugging — the latter is 55 points lower than the league average.
Megill has fallen victim to some control issues with an 11.4% walk rate, but the strikeouts appear sustainable with the sample size growing larger. That'll help mitigate some of the risk, but against a patient team like the Dodgers, we can't be so sure that this man — who has walked 15 in just 22 2/3 innings this month — will make it out completely unscathed.
We've only seen Clayton Kershaw pitch 11 innings this year, but those frames have not been pretty. The lefty's velocity is gone, he's given up a hard-hit ball over 50% of the time on contact, and his walk and strikeout rates are equivalent at 12.8%.
The strikeouts were down in a short sample last year as well, and Kershaw's xBA stood at an ugly .287, so this isn't a total surprise. The walks are new, however, and they've slowly been creeping into his game. He did put forth his best performance of the year last time out against Cleveland, throwing five innings of one-run ball with six hits charged to his line, and even in spite of the 3:2 strikeout to walk ratio in that one there was a lot to like.
Now, the Dodgers haven't had the best stretch at the plate, coming home with the seventh-ranked wRC+ in the last two weeks. They're still walking at a near-10% clip, but their strikeout rate and Isolated Power have slipped a bit. It looked like a breakout was coming after a shellacking of the Yankees over the weekend, but since they've scored just six runs in two games.
Mets vs Dodgers Prediction, Betting Analysis
This Dodgers offense isn't fully functioning at the moment as a few key players look to dig themselves out of slumps, and on the flip side, Megill looks like he's finally figuring out how to pitch.
The Mets have hit lefties well this season and have also matched the Dodgers at the plate in the last two weeks — if they haven't passed them. Their ISO is a strong .177 — just two points behind L.A. — and with a lower BABIP, their luck on contact could be turning as well.
I'm all in on the Cylor Megill renaissance and have to play the Mets at this price with all things being equal offensively. The Dodgers also struggle a bit more against fly-ball pitchers, and their plate discipline numbers are in a momentary rut.
Pick: Mets ML (+125)

Run Line (Spread)
