Padres vs Reds MLB Betting Preview
Editor's Note: This written pick is a transcription from today's episode of the Payoff Pitch Podcast.
This is the other team that played on Sunday Night Baseball last night. The Reds pulled out a win at Wrigley, but the game was delayed, so they didn't get out of there until late, and then they hopped on a plane back to Cincinnati. At least it's a relatively short trip, but this is usually a good spot to fade them, which is why I'll be on the Padres at -150 or better.
The bad news for the Reds is they have Brady Singer on the mound, who I think is one of the more consistently poor pitchers in baseball. Look at his game logs. Every single night it's six innings pitched, four earned runs. Five innings pitched, three earned runs. Five and two-thirds, four earned runs. That's just what he does.
More bad news is that the Reds have a bottom-five bullpen easily. There is not a single arm in the Cincinnati bullpen that I trust. Not a single one.
They're one of the other teams with a negative bullpen fWAR this year — it's the Reds, the Cubs, the Nationals, and the Royals, I believe.
Meanwhile, the Padres lead the league in bullpen fWAR because, of course, they do. They have Mason Miller; they have an extremely deep bullpen with tons of good guys. I'm a little worried we won't see Morejón or Rodríguez here, but it's not the end of the world because the unit is pretty deep.
I'm also not ready to give up on Michael King yet. His stuff and his strikeout-minus-walk rate have continually fallen over the past few seasons. That sinker-slider combo that was so good a few years ago just isn't as nasty as it used to be.
But when his command is good, and he's locating well, things can go well. And he's the far better home run avoidance pitcher in this matchup, which could be key in Cincinnati — the bandbox that is Great American Ball Park.
We actually got this same exact pitching matchup two months ago, though I think that one was in San Diego. And you know what happened in that one? The Reds bullpen gave up three runs in the eighth and ninth to lose by one. I'm kind of hoping for the exact same result here.
I also just think the Padres lineup has been trending up, really since Tatís got it together. And the Reds are going the opposite direction. Looks like they have Edwin Arroyo playing second base tonight, which is really tough — Zerillo projects him for a 61 wRC+. That's a big hole in the lineup.
So yeah, I like the Padres. This is more a fade of the Reds, who I'm low on, are in a bad spot, and have Brady Singer on the mound.
