Giants vs Padres MLB Betting Preview

San Francisco Giants Betting Preview

After a sluggish start to the season offensively, the Giants lineup has been productive over a fairly lengthy sample of play. They put together plenty of quality at-bats in Thursday's series opener, and easily could have won comfortably if not for going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Since June 1st, they have a wRC+ of 109 and hold a wRC+ of 111 versus right-handed pitching. They hold the seventh-best BB/K ratio in the league in that span and hold the third-highest expected batting average this season.

Pitching has been the larger issue behind San Francisco's 47-62 record, as the staff has an ERA of 4.34 this season and 4.66 on the road away from the pitcher-friendly confines of Oracle Park.

Lefty Carson Whisenhunt does not appear to be an overly convincing starter at this point in time, as the 25-year-old has pitched to an xERA of 5.82 and an xFIP of 4.92 across 15 and 2/3 MLB innings this season. His work in Triple-A also has not been overly impressive, with a 4.67 xERA and 4.90 xFIP across 82 and 1/3 innings.

The Giants bullpen ranks 21st in ERA this season and holds the fourth-highest xFIP in baseball. Their relievers also rank 22nd with a Pitching+ rating of 97.

San Diego Padres Betting Preview

The Padres will deploy Bradgley Rodriguez as an opener on Friday, with the hard-throwing right-hander expected to navigate the top of the Giants lineup before Germán Márquez takes over in bulk relief.

The opener strategy makes sense given Rodriguez's excellent season and San Diego's deep bullpen, but Márquez's recent form remains a concern. The veteran appears well on his way to finishing with an ERA north of 5.00 for the third consecutive season.

Márquez holds an xERA of 5.60 and an xFIP of 5.49, as well as a Pitching+ rating of 87. He has a strikeout-minus-walk rate of 5.7% and has been hard-hit 44.4% of the time.

The Padres lineup has been a major disappointment this season, but they have played up to expectations recently in hitting to a wRC+ of 116 over the last 30 days. They hold a strikeout rate of 20.4% during that time frame, and rank ninth in hard-hit rate.

Giants vs Padres Pick, Betting Analysis

Though neither offense is especially appealing to back in this matchup, both lineups have been considerably more productive over the latter stages of the season.

Whisenhunt and Márquez both project as well below-average starters, and it's realistic to see either side have a highly productive day at the plate in this matchup.

At -120 or better, there looks to be value backing this matchup to finish with nine or more total runs.

Pick: Over 8.5 (-115, FanDuel | Play to -120)
