We are in the second week of back-to-back Apex shows this week as we head into UFC Vegas 124, which features an impromptu heavyweight main event between Waldo Cortes Acosta and Johnny Walker. It's not the best card from an entertainment (or importance) standpoint, but gambling opportunities abound on the 13-fight slate.

One of the first “aha!” moments I had in gambling (generally, not just MMA) was starting to think about why markets might be wrong rather than just trying to predict what I think will happen.

At its core, a betting line is a market where we can “buy” or “sell” events. These markets are usually efficient, with the “price” eventually reflecting the true odds of the event.

While this is less true in MMA — where there are far more information asymmetries than in major markets like the NFL or NBA — it’s still broadly (and increasingly) the case. Therefore, to beat the markets over the long term, we need to find the spots where they’re wrong.

That’s the point of this piece. Inspired by our NFL “Luck Rankings,” I’ll look into spots where variance has favored one fighter more than another, making the line inefficient. The biggest input will be split and/or controversial decisions, with short-notice fights, later overruled fights, fluke injuries, and out-of-weight-class fights also considered.

The focus will be on fights that are reasonably likely to see the scorecards or where one fighter holds most of the finishing upside.

UFC Vegas 124 Predictions & Luck Ratings

Waldo Cortes Acosta (-205) vs. Johnny Walker (+170)

Typically, the UFC announces main events before any other fights on the card, which gives sportsbooks and the market a chance to hammer lines into efficiency before we get to fight week. That's not the case this week, as the original Sean Brady-Gabriel Bonfim main event was scrapped last week, and the UFC scrambled to book Johnny Walker vs. Waldo Cortes Acosta.

As far as I can tell, neither man was preparing for a fight, so this is a relatively level playing field. Plus, as a heavyweight bout, there's less issues with making weight — which is probably one of the reasons the UFC rushed to throw this one together. I'm not sure if Acosta cuts any weight to make the 265lbs limit, since he typically weighs in somewhere in the low 260s. Walker certainly won't have to worry about it, as a former light heavyweight who weighed in at 242 lbs for his heavyweight debut.

That size difference is less helpful for a fighter like "Salsa Boy" who rarely grapples, and he's the slower man on the feet. Walker also has more than four inches of reach on Acosta. The Brazilian looked great in his first trip to heavyweight, and this is a near-ideal matchup for him: a heavyweight who won't hold him down and doesn't have massive power to test his suspect chin.

Plus, the line has shifted heavily towards Walker after early-moving books opened with him around +240. I'm jumping on the +170 via DraftKings now before it dips any further.

Verdict: Walker Undervalued

Thomas Petersen (-162) vs. Gabriel Lorenco (+136)

It's hard for me to justify Petersen being favored in this fight. He's 1-2 over his last three, with two stoppage losses and a majority decision win. Overall in the UFC, he's 3-4, with all three of his wins coming via the judges and three of his four losses by finish.

He's stepping in on short notice to face Gabriel Lorenco, who punched his ticket to the UFC with a first-round knockout win as an underdog on the Contender Series. I bet Lorenco in that fight, but was pleasantly surprised by the growth — both in terms of skills and from a literal physical standpoint from the former middleweight — he demonstrated compared to the previous tape I had seen.

With Petersen coming in as a short-notice replacement for Alvin "Goozie" Hines, his typical plan of a slow, grinding decision might be harder to execute. Lorenco is younger, lighter, and had a full training camp, so he should be able to push a faster pace down the stretch. That also makes him a solid live betting candidate, but I'm getting half a unit down prefight via BetMGM at +140.

Verdict: Lorenco Undervalued

Murtazali Magomedov (-125) vs. Jose Delano (+105)

Murtazali Magomedov and Jose Delano are both 1-0 in the UFC after each picking up a win on the 2025 season of the Contender Series. However, Delano needed two reasonably competitive decisions to pick up those two wins, while Magomedov has spent less than three minutes inside the Octagon across those two bouts.

The market has loved Delano, lining him as a massive favorite in both of those appearances, while Magomedov was an underdog on the Contender Series. Given the method of their victories, I was surprised to once again see Delano seemingly overvalued. If anything, Magomedov has faced the stiffer competition, and looked better while doing so.

This line has already shifted since I began writing this article on Monday morning, with Magomedov -115 on DraftKings just a few hours ago. I expect it to continue to move that way, so I'm grabbing the -110 at Caesars before it moves any more. 85% of Tapology predictions are on Magomedov, so at worst we could likely set up an arbitrage opportunity for later in the week — or look to get in on Delano live during the fight if he survives the initial blitz.

Verdict: Magomedov Undervalued
