Nets vs Hawks NBA Preview
The Nets finally gave their fans a reason to celebrate with a 114-104 home victory over the Charlotte Hornets. Despite being just 2-6 on the season, the Nets' 5-3 record against the spread (ATS) suggests the betting markets might be somewhat undervaluing them.
For example, they rank third in Dunk & Threes' estimated plus-minus (+6.5) metric that spans the last 30 games.
Saturday's game against the Hawks will give the Nets a two-day rest advantage. Although they'll be playing away from home, the Nets have been a cover machine on the road, as evidenced by a perfect 4-0 ATS mark.
As for the injury report, the Nets are fairly healthy, with Egor Demin as their only notable player ruled out for the contest.
While Demin is a starter, his 7.8 points per game as a second-year player suggests the Nets have enough firepower to overcome his absence.
Michael Porter Jr. (21.4 PPG) continues to lead the team in scoring as he did last year. The difference is the Nets have added a second 20-point scorer in Julius Randle (21.0 PPG).
If we turn to the Hawks, they enter this game on a three-game winning streak, which includes a home-and-home series sweep against the Wizards.
At 6-4, the Hawks' underlying numbers align with their record. Atlanta ranks 14th in Net Rating with a +3.1 mark while playing the 16th-toughest schedule thus far.
Atlanta has tremendous depth up and down its lineup with as many as eight players averaging 20 or more minutes. Moreover, Atlanta's bench ranks seventh in scoring with 41.5 points per game.
The Hawks entered the campaign with a projected win total of 43.5 games after winning 46 games last season.
First-year player Kingston Flemings has provided a real spark to the team—so much that Hawks head coach Quin Snyder inserted him into the starting lineup two games ago.
Flemings responded by posting back-to-back double-digit scoring performances, extending his streak to three games. Snyder's decision shifts CJ McCollum to the bench and further strengthens Atlanta's second unit.
Therefore, the Hawks have plenty of upside, and they look poised to outperform their preseason projections.
Nets vs Hawks Pick, Betting Analysis
Without any adjustments to the Hawks' injury report, my model projects Atlanta should be closer to a 7.5-point favorite. However, the margin remains tight, given the potential uncertainty if key players are rested.
As a result, my next option is to pivot to the player props market where we can find a bit more value.
Atlanta's Luguentz Dort has an assists prop of 1.5 despite averaging 1.8 through 10 games this season, with a median of 2.5.
More importantly, Dort has had back-to-back games registering three or four assists. In head-to-head matchups, he cleared this line in each of his last five meetings against Brooklyn.
The Nets' defense ranks dead last in assists allowed to opposing power forwards with 7.0 per game, while the league average is only 4.63.
With the Hawks ranking third in the league for pace (103.1), this game should have enough tempo for Dort to create scoring opportunities.
Lastly, since the Nets have covered the spread in seven of the last 10 head-to-head meetings, a competitive game likely means Dort gets maximum minutes on the floor.
Pick: Luguentz Dort Over 1.5 Assists (+105)
