Detroit Pistons Betting Preview

Detroit comes to Philadelphia unbeaten. The Pistons opened the season by erasing a 22-point deficit to beat Boston 121-113, a game in which Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren each scored 22, Duncan Robinson hit five threes for 21 points, and Javonte Green came off the bench to score 19 after not playing in the first half.

Ausar Thompson added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and the Pistons followed with a 128-111 win at Miami on Friday.

However, they may be missing two key pieces for this matchup. Detroit will be without center Jalen Duren, who is out with a right hamstring strain, and Ausar Thompson is questionable with a right ankle sprain.

Philadelphia 76ers Betting Preview

Philadelphia has been just as quick out of the gate. The Sixers beat the reigning champion Knicks 106-100 on the road in the opener and followed with a 114-106 home win over Cleveland in which they rallied from 29 points down.

Tyrese Maxey scored a game-high 32 with six assists, Embiid had 24 points, Brown scored 21, and LeBron James added 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while rookie VJ Edgecombe also handed out six.

The Sixers most recently took down Milwaukee on Saturday without James, who was ruled out with lower back and sciatica management. Maxey continued his sharp shooting from downtown on his way to posting 26 points and four assists, while Joel Embiid had 28 points, 11 rebounds, and ten assists.

Anfernee Simons and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope have given the bench shooting that keeps the floor spaced around the stars.

Philadelphia's injury report is the more significant one: LeBron James is out with lower back and sciatica management, Joel Embiid is a game-time decision, and Jabari Walker is a game-time decision with a knee issue.

Pistons vs 76ers Pick, Betting Analysis

The line asks Maxey to be a playmaker, and his value to this offense so far has come from scoring. He has handed out five, six, and four assists in his first three games, an average of five a night, and he has stayed under tonight's 6.5 number every time. That includes Saturday against Milwaukee, when James was out, and Maxey still had just four.

Playmaking is spread across a roster full of players who can create for others: Embiid, Brown and James had six, six and seven assists in the opener, and Edgecombe matched Maxey's six in the second game.

Our PRO projections have him at 4.88 assists tonight, more than 1.5 assists under the 6.5 line, which is where the 26.7% edge over the -105 price comes from.

The matchup helps, too. With Jalen Duren out, Detroit loses its best interior presence, which gives Maxey a reason to attack the rim himself, and shooters like Simons and Caldwell-Pope give Philadelphia additional creators and scorers on the floor to share the ball.

The obvious risk is that LeBron James is out again and Embiid is a game-time decision, since he has regularly sat out at least one game of a back-to-back. If Embiid sits, Maxey could run more of the offense and see more passing chances, and an increase in pace or a spike in made threes by his teammates could push him past 6.5.

Although with a projection of more than 1.5 assists under the number and a role that has leaned toward scoring, the under at -105 is the better side.

Pick: Tyrese Maxey Under 6.5 Assists (-105, bet365)
