Detroit Pistons vs Philadelphia 76ers Preview
On Thursday, the Pistons defeated the Timberwolves 113-108 at home. Offensively, Daniss Jenkins led the way with 26 points and eight assists, while Jalen Duren had 22 points and 14 rebounds.
The Timberwolves did not have Anthony Edwards, and the Pistons were without Cade Cunningham once again.
While some may have expected the Pistons to fall off a bit without their star, they improved to 8-2 since he went down with a collapsed lung against Washington.
Their magic number to clinch the top seed in the East remains one after the Celtics defeated the Bucks last night. The Pistons will have a chance to clinch it themselves tonight.
Minnesota made its way to Philadelphia last night and got Edwards back, but the Sixers held him to eight points on 3-for-15 from the field. The Sixers won 115-103 for their fourth win in their past five games.
With five games left, the Sixers have a tiebreaker over the Raptors for the sixth seed. They are also getting healthier just at the right time.
That five-game stretch coincides with Paul George's return from suspension. He has looked more like the Paul George of old, scoring 23 points in four of those games.
Joel Embiid sat out the Wizards' game with an illness, but he had 19 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks last night.
However, neither has played back-to-backs too often, if at all, this season, and that appears to be the case again tonight.
Kelly Oubre Jr. had been coming off the bench since George returned, but he figures to get back in the starting lineup tonight.
I would also expect a heavy dose of Tyrese Maxey tonight, but it will not be easy for him tonight. He will likely draw Ausar Thompson, who just won his second Eastern Conference Defensive Player of the Month award this season.
Thompson is averaging 2.7 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. After being questionable for a few games, he is off the injury report along with Duren. However, Tobias Harris is questionable once again, while Isaiah Stewart is out once again, along with Cunningham.
Pistons vs 76ers Best Bet, Analysis
Pistons -2.5
The Pistons have won five of the last six meetings against the 76ers, and they covered in four of those games.
This year, they have had injury fortune on their side as neither Embiid nor George has played against them. However, the Pistons have also defeated the Sixers by 13 and nine points in recent meetings without Cunningham.
In Cunningham's absence, the Pistons' defense has remained elite, resulting in a +10.9 net rating.
With an opportunity to clinch the 1-seed tonight, expect the Pistons to ratchet up the defensive effort on the second night of a back-to-back. That should carry them to a victory of four or more points tonight.
Pick: Pistons -2.5 (-114, FanDuel)
