Dolphins vs Jets NFL Week 7 Preview
It has been an incredibly bleak season for the winless, Dolphins who have looked completely lost on both sides of the ball.
The offense is stagnant, generating a meager 14.0 points per game, ranking 31st in the NFL. The passing game led by Malik Willis has been particularly painful to watch. Miami has managed just two passing touchdowns to four interceptions on the year.
You simply cannot win football games in the modern NFL with a passing attack that completely lacks explosion and turns the ball over at that rate. The Dolphins are averaging just 5.1 yards per play and converting a dismal 29.8% of their drives into scores.
The defense hasn't offered much resistance either. Miami is giving up 26.4 points per game and allowing opponents to score on 50% of drives.
Opposing quarterbacks are torching this Dolphins secondary, racking up 11 passing touchdowns to just three interceptions, while averaging an explosive 7.4 net yards per attempt.
The defense looks gassed, spending far too much time on the field due to the offense's inability to sustain drives.
New York hasn't exactly set the world on fire either.
The Jets are trying to stay afloat in the AFC East after losing to the Patriots in Week 6. Their offense has looked competent at times, averaging 18.7 points per game, and they are protecting the football (Geno Smith has just one interception this season), which tends to bode well in divisional rock fights.
However, the Jets defense is the true strength of this team. They rank fifth in the NFL in points allowed, surrendering just 20.3 per game.
New York is making opponents work for every yard, holding opposing offenses to a mere 38.1% scoring rate on drives and forcing turnovers on 11.1% of opponent possessions.
But, it's tough to win by margin when you are built to win ugly, low-scoring games by controlling the clock and relying on defense to generate stops and favorable field position.
Dolphins vs Jets Prediction, Betting Analysis
It feels gross to back an 0-5 team that can barely throw a forward pass, but this is exactly the type of spot where we find hidden value.
We are trusting the Bet Labs system titled "Great Condition, Divisional Road 'Dogs" here.
The theory works on the belief that divisional underdogs traveling in good weather during the middle of the season fly under the radar.
In the NFL, divisional games are almost always tighter and more unpredictable. The familiarity and bitter rivalry factor naturally narrow the talent gap between the two rosters.
When the visiting team is the underdog in October, weather conditions are generally stable with limited wind, allowing both teams to simply execute their game plans without the elements serving as a great equalizer.
In these specific spots, the betting public tends to overvalue the home side. They look at Miami's 0-5 record and New York's stout defense and blindly lay the points.
Yet, divisional familiarity and the motivational boost of playing a bitter rival make the road 'dog significantly more competitive than the spread suggests.
The Jets want to run the ball and play defense; they are not built to blow teams out.
This total is sitting at a low 39.5, which makes catching 4.5 points even more valuable. Every point matters in a game that profiles as a low-scoring divisional grind.
The system says to hold your nose and take the points in a spot where the math and the system tell us the value lies with the winless underdog.
Pick: Dolphins +4.5 (-104)
