Alex Hinton’s Diamondbacks vs Padres Betting Preview
The Diamondbacks received good news over the weekend when Corbin Carroll returned to the lineup. Originally diagnosed with a chip fracture in his left wrist, Carroll missed only a couple of weeks. Yesterday, he was named an All-Star for the second time in his three MLB seasons.
Carroll did not make a big impact as he went 0-for-9 against the Royals. The Diamondbacks dropped two of the three games as they went 3-7 on their homestand, which has to be a gut punch.
Just like last season, the Diamondbacks have one of the best offenses in baseball but have struggled on the mound. They are fourth in the MLB in runs scored and also 27th in team ERA.
Tonight, they will look to get a quality outing from Zac Gallen. Over the past three years, Gallen went 43-19 with a 3.20 ERA, 12.3 WAR, and finished in the top five in Cy Young voting.
However, this season, he is just 6-9 with a 5.45 ERA and 4.81 xERA. He ranks in the 13th percentile or worse in average exit velocity, barrel rate, and hard-hit percentage.
The Diamondbacks enter this series 11 1/2 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. They could make some headway against the Padres with a sweep as they trail San Diego by 4 1/2 games for the final NL Wild Card spot.
If not, Gallen, a pending free agent, could be on the move in a few weeks. Another name to watch around the trade deadline is Eugenio Suarez.
The 33-year-old has 28 home runs, 73 RBI, and a .881 OPS. He recently hit the 300th home run of his career and was named an All-Star for the second time yesterday.
The Padres have a lot of big names in their lineup. However, much of their success over the last few years has been fueled by a strong rotation led by Dylan Cease, Michael King, Yu Darvish, and Joe Musgrave. This season, most of those names have been unavailable, but they will get Darvish back tonight for his season debut.
In 19 career starts against Arizona, Darvish is 9-4 with a 3.63 ERA and 135 strikeouts in 106 and 2/3 innings. He has been battling right elbow inflammation, which has kept him on the IL to this point. He threw 64 pitches in a simulated game last week, so I would not expect to see him past the fifth inning tonight.
The Padres began their homestand by taking two of three from the Rangers. They have split their last 10 games and will look to build some momentum heading into the All-Star with four against the DBacks and three against the Phillies. It would certainly help if they could bring a few more runs across the plate.
Lately, they have certainly generated traffic on the bases. Luis Arraez is hitting .400 over the last week, while Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts are both over .300. However, the Padres have scored just 18 runs in their past six games while homering just twice.
Jackson Merrill is 3-for-24 with 10 strikeouts in that span. The 22-year-old last homered on May 27th and has just 10 RBI since then, so the Padres would certainly like to get him going.
Diamondbacks vs Padres Prediction, Betting Analysis
Luis Arraez has recorded two hits in three of his last three games. He is 3-for-12 against Gallen and has recorded two or more hits + runs + runs batted in six times in his last 10 games.
Gavin Sheets has faced Gallen just twice, but he is 2-for-2 with a home run and a double against him. I like him for a hit tonight as he enters with a hit in his last four games, hitting .357 in that span.
Meanwhile, Merrill is not someone who typically strikes out a lot, particularly for a young hitter. However, he has at least one strikeout in each of his last seven games and in nine of his last 10 games. He is also 1-for-3 with two strikeouts against Gallen. This Padres' parlay gives us +290 odds on DraftKings.
