Diamondbacks vs Giants MLB Betting Preview

Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Preview

In the thick of the wild-card race in the National League, the Diamondbacks can ill afford to drop a four-game series to the struggling San Francisco Giants, yet with a loss on Friday that's very much possible.

Left-hander Kohl Drake is expected to be the man for the job, though there's been no roster move quite yet. He's made two starts since a mid-August demotion to Triple-A, and they haven't exactly been encouraging. Drake allowed 10 runs across just five innings — albeit one was unearned — and he walked nine to just two strikeouts. On top of that, he allowed 10 hits.

It was the continuation of what's been an utterly disappointing 2026 for the rookie, who ended 2025 in the Rangers organization. There, he compiled a 2.44 ERA in 12 starts at Double-A Frisco, only to be knocked around in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League of Triple-A.

He's yet to really figure out how to pitch at that level, and the Diamondbacks grew impatient enough to give him a shot in the big leagues this year.

Well, one thing Drake hasn't done in his 16 2/3 big-league innings is walk many guys. He owns a 7.8% walk rate, and that's about where the good ends. His 5.40 ERA could be much worse if not for his exceptional outfield defense and helpful home park judging by his 8.75 Expected ERA.

He's also going to be at the mercy of whatever contact he gives up, as his 16.9% strikeout rate is poor and his strikeout numbers in Triple-A were pretty subpar.

Walks haven't really been an issue for Drake, which is why the nine walks in five innings this month at Triple-A are surprising.

He's almost certainly working on some stuff down there, but it doesn't necessarily appear it's working — and it's not apparent what it really is. Drake's still pitching to a ton of fly balls and few punchouts, and he continues to be burned by the home run.

San Francisco Giants Betting Preview

The Giants will counter with Blade Tidwell, a young pitcher with some ups and downs across the minor-league levels the last two years in his own right. Unlike Drake, however, he seems to be trending upwards, capturing some of the magic that had him fly up prospect boards a couple of years ago with the Mets.

Tidwell began the season in the major leagues as a reliever, only to stretch back out in Triple-A. Over his last six minor-league starts prior to being recalled, he posted a 3.13 ERA with opponents hitting .229 against him, pitching to a good deal of outs in the air.

Since then, he's pitched to a 3.92 ERA in four starts with the Giants this month, with one clunker against the Rockies and three solid showings.

He's allowed just one home run as a starter, and has managed to keep the walks in check aside from that aforementioned outing where he issued five walks in 4 1/3 innings. Free passes have always been an issue for Tidwell in his career, however, with an 11% walk rate in Triple-A this season and a 10.5% for his career in the majors.

The big thing for Tidwell is that he continues to pitch to friendly contact, so as his strikeout and walk performance takes time to develop, he should reasonably be able to work his way through games. Of course, pitching in San Francisco will help him keep the ball in the park as well.

Diamondbacks vs Giants Pick, Betting Analysis

As we get set to watch two guys serve up plenty of fly balls, and likely a fair number of walks, we must take note of how both teams fare against fly-ball pitchers. Against these types, the Giants own the third-best OPS in baseball, and against ground-ballers they rank 29th.

It's a ridiculous discrepancy, but it speaks to the fact that this team will rely on its power and loves to swing the bat. The real contact-oriented guys will be a problem for SF, but a guy like Drake who serves up plenty of hard-hit balls in the air should be minced meat.

Tidwell, meanwhile, has pitched well and won't run into the same sort of matchup buzzsaw as Drake. The Diamondbacks do technically prefer fly-ballers, but own just a .721 OPS in the split to rank 17th.

They also look to hit the ball with low strikeout and walk rates, but they do swing at the third-lowest rate in baseball which could leave Tidwell prone to give up some walks.

Still, I don't really see much scaring me off of this read. Arizona's just 16th in baseball with a 100 wRC+ over the last two weeks, and while its .162 Isolated Power is good, it's probably not good enough to combat a guy who's been exceptional in pitching to contact through the air.

I think we have to go with the home underdogs here to make it two straight against their division rival.
