Red Sox vs Yankees MLB Betting Preview

Boston Red Sox Betting Preview

With wins in seven of their last nine games, the Red Sox are now 41-16 since June 25 and have a 98.5% chance of securing at least a Wild Card berth, per FanGraphs.

Their four-game sweep of the rival Yankees in late June was the turning point in their season, and a similar outcome in this weekend’s compelling series would give Boston a small chance of making a run at the division, particularly with three games remaining against the Rays.

Sandoval has struggled to find consistency throughout 39 2/3 innings in his debut season with the Red Sox, following a pair of excellent campaigns in 2023 and 2024. He has done a fairly good job limiting hard contact overall, with a 33.9% hard-hit rate, while his stuff grades out as better than average with a 102 Stuff+ rating.

However, two dreadful outings against the Pirates and Rays have significantly inflated his ERA.

Boston's bullpen has remained in excellent form recently, as its ERA of 2.15 over the last 30 days is the best mark in MLB. Red Sox relievers also rank third in baseball with an xFIP of 3.52 in that span and also hold the fifth best Pitching+ rating. During the team's 41-16 charge up the standings the bullpen also holds a 2.31 ERA.

The Red Sox will get their fourth look of the season against Cy Young favourite Cam Schlittler in this matchup, and as with the majority of MLB, they have not been successful thus far. Schlittler holds an ERA of 0.98 throughout his first 18 and 2/3 innings of the season versus the Red Sox.

The Red Sox lineup has hit to a wRC+ of 108 versus right-handed pitching since June 1st, but do hold a modest expected weighted on base average of .313. They also rank 25th in hard-hit rate, 17th in line-drive rate and 16th in expected slug rate.

New York Yankees Betting Preview

After a very lengthy period of drastically below-average play, the Yankees offense was showing signs of life entering Thursday's series finale versus the Astros before falling flat versus Hayden Wesneski.

A few solid performances may not be enough to prove that the lineup is still overly formidable without Aaron Judge, as since June 1st the Yankees rank 29th with a wRC+ of 88 and 29th in weighted on-base average. They have also struck out at the highest rate in baseball in that span, and rank only above the Angels in BB/K ratio.

Schlittler enters this matchup priced at -165 to win the Cy Young and has been going toe-to-toe with Dylan Cease of late in what has become a high-quality race. Throughout his last 35 innings, Schlittler has pitched to an ERA of 2.06 with an xFIP of 2.28 and struck out 34.3% of batters faced.

New York's bullpen has also been quite effective recently, as over the last 30 days it holds a 3.33 ERA, which is not overly surprising given the strength of the unit on paper.

Red Sox vs Yankees Pick, Betting Analysis

Though Sandoval's command has been hit-or-miss this season and he does seemingly hold some blow-up potential, he should be the weakest pitcher to work at any point in this matchup for either side, and he does get a reasonable matchup versus a Yankees side that has struggled mightily offensively for three months while displaying little discipline at the plate.

While it's not entirely fun to count on a decent showing from Sandoval, given how his stuff has graded out and the favourable matchup, a price of -115 to back under 7.5 runs does look to provide value with Schlittler toeing the rubber for the Yankees and both teams offering excellent bullpens.

Pick: Under 7.5 (-125 or Better)
