Dodgers vs Padres MLB Betting Preview
After Yoshinobu Yamamoto only finished with four strikeouts last night, I'm going right back to the well with the Dodgers' starter today, Emmet Sheehan. We know all about the Padres' decline in plate discipline that I highlighted yesterday.
However, to their credit, San Diego showed a lot more discipline against Yamamoto, whiffing only eight times over six innings and laying off his splitter, which he threw for strikes only 57 percent of the time.
As we look at Sheehan tonight, the bar for him to clear is one strikeout lower, yet he possesses the same upside as Yamamoto did yesterday. Sheehan's whiff and swinging strike rate are both above average, and his chase rate is elite.
Much like Yamamoto, the key for Sheehan will be to get ahead so that he can finish off Padres' hitters with pitches outside the zone. His first pitch strike rate is slightly below average at 62.1 percent, per Handigraphs.
The only other caveat digging into Sheehan's upside is his length. He's averaged just 14.5 outs per start this season, but with multiple long-relief arms used throughout the first two games of this series, we should see him given a longer leash if effective.
The market seems to agree as his Outs Recorded prop price is shaded towards him recording over 15.5 outs. If he works into the sixth, we will be in a great spot for him to exceed his strikeout line today.
Pick: Emmet Sheehan Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-108, FanDuel)
