Doug Ziefel’s Brewers vs Braves Preview
The Brewers have been churning out wins lately, as they come into this one having won seven of their last 10 ballgames, which includes a recent road sweep of the Nationals.
Their tour of the NL East continues tonight as they travel to Atlanta, and their bats should stay hot in the early going.
Milwaukee gets to face the recently acquired Erick Fedde.
Fedde is not a difference-making acquisition by any means, sporting a 5.33 ERA; he's more of a warm body they can send to the mound every five days.
Fedde does not miss bats and allows a great deal of hard contact.
The matchup doesn't get much better for the Brewers, as over the last month, they rank second in wRC+ and first in BABIP against righties. However, the Braves' bullpen has been their one bright spot in a disappointing season.
That solid bullpen is relatively fresh and likely to be deployed early, as Fedde can't be trusted to deliver five quality innings.
As for the Braves, they are in need of some home cooking as they ended their most recent road trip with a 3-7 record.
Injuries and inconsistency have been the two themes of the Braves' season as their once formidable lineup does not pose a significant threat, even to a pitcher due for regression like Quinn Priester.
Priester has done a fine job for Milwaukee this season, as he comes into this outing with a 3.27 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. He has become one of the game's best groundball artists as his groundball rate sits in the 96th percentile.
If Priester's command is sharp, he has the ability to work quickly through this order, as the Braves hold the 10th-highest groundball rate in the majors.
However, after Priester departs is when things can get really tough, as the backend of the Brewers' bullpen is elite and fresh for this matchup.
Brewers vs Braves Prediction, Betting Analysis
It's clear both starters are vulnerable in this matchup, but they have plenty of tendencies and external factors working in their favor.
We've seen the total fall since opening, and that is primarily due to the consistent light rain that could occur in this matchup.
Playing through a drizzle will aid the starters until the elite bullpens are able to take over.
We shouldn't see much production in the later innings of this matchup, and that will help secure the under.
Pick: Under 8 (+100) or Under 8.5 (-120)
