Alex Hinton’s Yankees vs Cardinals Preview
After beginning the year 42-25, the Yankees fell victim to another summer swoon under manager Aaron Boone. A once commanding AL East lead has turned into a 6.5 game deficit after another Blue Jays victory yesterday.
They hold a half-game lead on the Guardians for the third AL Wild Card spot. The Yankees are coming off yet another series victory over the Twins, but they did drop the finale on Wednesday.
Gil will open up this series in St. Louis in his third start this year. Gil had a rough season debut against the Marlins as he allowed five runs on five hits while walking four in three and 1/3 innings.
He was much better last Saturday against the Astros when he allowed two runs and fanned seven in five and 1/3 innings. If Gil can regain his AL Rookie of the Year form, it will provide a big boost to the Yankees down the stretch.
One hitter the Yankees may not have available this weekend is former Cardinal Paul Goldschmidt, who is dealing with a knee injury that may land him on the IL.
In six seasons with the Cardinals, Goldschmidt hit .278 with 153 home runs, accumulated 22.6 WAR, and won the 2022 NL MVP. However, the Yankees still have fellow former MVPs Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, and they will have a good matchup on Friday.
Stanton had just 0.6 WAR over the past three seasons, but he has already more than doubled that total with 1.4 WAR in 43 games this season. He is slashing .299/.373/.576 with 12 home runs and 34 RBI.
While he has not played enough games to qualify on StatCast, Stanton would rank among the league's leaders in Average Exit Velocity (95.3 mph), Hard Hit Percentage (55.9%) and barrel rate (18.3%).
Meanwhile. Pallante ranks in the fifth percentile with a 15% strikeout rate and has allowed seven home runs and a .781 OPS to right-handed hitters.
That may help Judge get going as well. He has been quiet since his return from the IL last week, but he did hit his first home run since July 23rd in Tuesday's win over the Twins.
With the Mets losing 13 of their last 15 games, the Cardinals are just 3.5 games out of the final NL Wild Card spot. However, they missed a golden opportunity to shrink that gap even more as they lost two of three to the Rockies at home this week.
To make matters worse, the Cardinals are the only team to be shut out by the Rockies this season, and it has happened twice.
Runs have been hard to come by for the Red Birds of late. Since the All-Star break, they are averaging 3.3 runs per game, have a .661 team OPS, and are just 10-15 in that span. However, it will be interesting to see how they match up with Gil, who likes to pile up strikeouts.
The Cardinals are a difficult team to strike out, ranking seventh in strikeout rate this season. However, they are last in walk rate as well. The potential combination of low walks and strikeouts could help Gil manage his pitch count and work into the sixth inning again.
The Cardinals would also like more innings from Pallante tonight. Last time out, he was rocked by the Cubs and allowed six runs on seven hits in 1 and 2/3 innings. He has allowed five runs or more in four of his last six starts.
Yankees vs Cardinals Prediction, Betting Analysis
If Pallante continues to struggle, the Yankees should be able to take advantage. They have scored five runs in three of their last five games, which resulted in three wins.
While five runs will put them in position to secure another victory, I prefer the team total because of the better price and being able to avoid the Yankees’ bullpen.
Three hitters I like to lead the way are Stanton, Judge and Ben Rice.
Pick: Yankees Team Total Over 4.5 Runs (-115, Fanatics)
