Nationals vs Braves MLB Betting Preview

Washington Nationals Betting Preview

The Nationals are having their best season since the beginning of the pandemic. They are 55-54, with a +28 run differential (sixth-best in the NL).

The offense has multiple exciting pieces between James Wood, C.J. Abrams, Luis Garcia, and Dylan Crews. Meanwhile, the rotation has a budding Cade Cavalli and a potential star in the recently acquired Connelly Early.

Beyond Cavalli and late-stage breakout Foster Griffin, the rotation has been thin, and the bullpen is a disaster.

Nevertheless, bullpens can be fixed within a year. If the Nationals bolster the back-end of their rotation in the offseason, they should be a playoff team in 2027 (assuming there is a 2027 season).

Washington has rebuilt from the ashes of the Juan Soto trade and still has a potential number-one prospect, Eli Willits, developing in the minors. This is an exciting time for an organization with a championship to their name in the past decade.

Atlanta Braves Betting Preview

The Braves may be back on track. Superstar OF Ronald Acuna Jr. is back in the lineup, and A.J. Smith-Shawver just pitched his first game of the season. Also, veterans Sean Murphy and Ha-Seong Kim have begun their rehab assignments.

Atlanta holds a 6 1/2 game lead in the NL East, with a 63-45 record. The second-place Phillies have lost eight of their past ten games, while the Marlins are on a three-game win streak after losing 12 straight.

The rotation is expected to get Spencer Schwellenbach back by season's end to complement Smith-Shawver, and reinforcements via the trade deadline are possible given their standing.

The biggest problem is Austin Riley. His $21.2 million average-annual-value contract (until 2032!) demands playing time, but his bat is a black hole.

Riley's 79 wrC+ is the worst of his career, and there is no silver lining. He has declined offensively since his peak season in 2022.

  • 2022: 144 wRC+
  • 2023: 128 wRC+
  • 2024: 116 wRC+
  • 2025: 103 wRC+
  • 2026: 79 wRC+

His .295 xwOBA does not suggest much regression from his .288 wOBA, and his 30% strikeout rate is his highest since 2019 (his rookie year). Despite a bloated contract, the Braves should be looking for ways to offload Riley sooner rather than later.

Nationals vs Braves Pick, Betting Analysis

Jake Irvin is making his first start for the Nats since May 23. He had multiple promising outings in his first 11 starts, but still posted a 5.23 ERA.

Irvin's 15.8% K-BB this season is his career-best, and he did post an excellent 12 K to 1 BB through his three minor league rehab starts (11 1/2 IP), with no runs allowed. However, he did not face more than 15 batters in any of the three outings.

Unless Irvin knocks down the Braves lineup early with a low pitch count, he will not pitch more than five innings today, leaving significant work for the Nationals' low-end bullpen.

Both offenses in this matchup are top-five in the past two weeks. Washington ranks first (149 wRC+), while the Braves rank fifth (121 wRC+). The Nationals' offense is weaker after dealing breakout 3B to the Red Sox earlier this week, but still strong overall.

Also, both offenses rank among the best 10 all season against RHP. Atlanta has the bonus of Acuna Jr. returning to the lineup as well.

Braves starter Grant Holmes may seem steady with his 3.79 ERA, but this is backed by a 4.70 xERA, 4.64 xFIP, and 4.71 SIERA. He has pitched better in his past five starts (2.63 ERA, 4.08 xERA, 4.53 xFIP), but with luck still on his side.

Furthermore, the Braves are coming off a doubleheader against the Mets, with every reliever being utilized throughout the day. Ideally, this works to an advantage for today's play.

Pick: Over 9.5 (-115, FanDuel)
