76ers vs Nets NBA Preview
After a disappointing and injury-riddled season last year, the 76ers are off to a fast start behind their young guards. Tyrese Maxey is the league's leading scorer at 35.2 points and also ranks fourth with 9.4 assists per game. It has come on a heavy workload as he has played 40 minutes in every game while attempting 20 field goals or more in four of them.
VJ Edgecombe rose through the draft process as others did not want to play in Philadelphia, but he is looking like the perfect fit in Philadelphia already. The third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft is averaging 21.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game thus far. He has also shown early signs of being a tenacious defender.
Even as the Sixers suffered their first loss on Friday to Boston, there were promising signs. Joel Embiid scored 20 points for the third consecutive game and played a season-high 25 minutes. However, he will sit today as part of his injury recovery. Paul George's season debut will also have to wait, but he appears close to returning as well.
Philadelphia ranks second in offensive rating this season and they will face a Brooklyn team that ranks last, 30th in defensive rating. After making five first-round picks in June, the team has committed to a rebuild and has gotten off to an 0-5 start. While the Nets have not gotten much from their rookie class yet, Egor Demin is shooting 41% from three to begin his NBA career. It is a promising sign after he shot just 28% in his lone season at BYU. However, he also has yet to attempt a field goal inside the arc.
Cam Thomas (23.4 PPG) and Michael Porter Jr. (21.6 PPG) have provided most of the scoring punch for Brooklyn this season. They both have two 30-point games already, while Porter Jr. has shown improved playmaking chops and is averaging 3.2 assists per game. If that holds, it would be a new career-high for him.
76ers vs Nets Prediction, Betting Analysis
Brooklyn has lost three of its first five games by double digits, one by seven points, and another by five points. It is last in defensive rating and 29th with a -14.1 net rating. Philadelphia is 4-1 against the spread thus far and it should control this game even without Embiid. It has won and covered six of the last 10 meetings as well.
Without Embiid, it will likely be another high usage game for Maxey. The 24-year-old has recorded 40 points and assists in four of his first five games and finished with 37 in the other. Meanwhile, Edgecombe has recorded 25 PRA in four of his first five games. Maxey and Edgecombe will both have plus matchups against Brooklyn's backcourt.
