Colts vs Vikings NFL Week 7 Preview
The walls seem to be caving in for Indianapolis.
Off to a dismal 2-4 start, the Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard following last week’s shocking loss to the lowly Titans. Head coach Shane Steichen is now on the hot seat, while Daniel Jones has looked rusty in his return from a 2025 Achilles tear.
To make matters worse, rumors are swirling that Indianapolis could move on from superstar running back Jonathan Taylor ahead of the trade deadline.
Despite not having a first-round pick, a rebuild seems increasingly inevitable. The Colts’ schedule doesn’t get any easier over the next two weeks, with back-to-back road games against Minnesota and Jacksonville.
Perhaps most notably ahead of today's matchup, cornerback Sauce Gardner and tight end Tyler Warren have both been ruled out.
Warren will miss his second consecutive game, leaving Indianapolis without its top red-zone receiving threat. He also leads the Colts with 30 receptions, making his absence even more significant.
I’d expect Indianapolis to lean heavily on 13 personnel, using every available weapon to get the most out of Taylor. Opposing defenses have adjusted to the Colts offense, which has struggled mightily through the air. Jones is averaging just 215 passing yards per game, and no Colts receiver has eclipsed 300 receiving yards on the season.
Michael Pittman Jr. departed for Pittsburgh in the offseason, while Alec Pierce suffered another long-term injury early in the year. That has left Indianapolis with a depleted and underwhelming receiving corps featuring Josh Downs, Keenan Allen, and Laquon Treadwell.
As mentioned earlier, defenses have focused on limiting Indianapolis’ explosiveness on the ground. That approach has contributed to Taylor averaging a career-low 4.0 yards per carry.
Gardner’s absence will also loom large for a Colts defense that ranks among the league’s worst, allowing 27.3 points per game, the sixth-most in the NFL. Indianapolis is also in the bottom 10 in total defense, surrendering 351.2 yards per game.
It’ll be fascinating to see which side comes out on top Sunday when a stoppable force (the Vikings’ offense) meets a movable object (the Colts’ defense).
Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores has been one of the biggest talking points around the NFL this season.
Despite ranking in the bottom five in offensive EPA per play, Minnesota’s aggressive defense has been nothing short of elite. The Vikings rank first in defensive EPA per play, allowing the second-fewest yards (259.8) and the fewest points (12.8) per game. It's the primary reason they’ve raced out to a sparkling 5-0 start.
Flores has blitzed on more than 70% of defensive snaps this season, leaving opposing quarterbacks scrambling for answers. That pressure should be a major problem for Daniel Jones given his struggles through the air.
As mentioned above, Minnesota’s offense has had its own issues, but injuries have played a significant role.
Kyler Murray missed 1.5 games after suffering a concussion in Week 1, while Jordan Mason landed on injured reserve. Justin Jefferson (ankle) and T.J. Hockenson (concussion) have also missed time.
The good news for Minnesota is that Murray could have his usual supporting cast available Sunday. Hockenson has returned to practice following the bye, as has Mason.
We’ve yet to see the Vikings offense at full strength, yet Minnesota remains undefeated and enters this matchup well-rested after its bye week.
With key contributors potentially returning, this could finally be the game where Murray and the offense find their rhythm.
Colts vs Vikings Prediction, Betting Analysis
There are two angles I like in this matchup.
The first is taking advantage of Tyler Warren’s injury. The biggest takeaway from last week was the usage of tight end Will Mallory. In his first game back from injured reserve, Mallory played a team-high 52% of the snaps.
Mallory drew six targets, hauling in two catches for 20 yards. From a volume perspective, Mallory should remain involved with Warren sidelined. The Miami product also posted a career-high 31% air-yard share, a promising sign for his receiving upside. His prop line has climbed in recent days, but I still think there’s value at the current number.
The other play I like is Justin Jefferson to score a touchdown. The Vikings could finally have their offense at full strength, meaning Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson should draw some attention away from Jefferson.
Factor in Sauce Gardner’s absence, and the Colts pass defense could be in for a long afternoon. Jefferson has scored a touchdown in half of his games played this season and leads all receivers with four red-zone targets.
In a matchup where Minnesota should be able to move the ball against Indianapolis, I like grabbing the plus money on Jefferson to find the end zone and help lead the Vikings to their sixth consecutive win.
