Dodgers vs Pirates MLB Betting Preview
The Dodgers may ultimately offer him enough innings to win the award, but Ohtani is in the mix to win his first ever Cy Young, which would presumably come in line with another NL MVP if he is able to stay healthy.
Ohtani has pitched to an ERA of 0.74 across 61 innings and will have a good chance of finishing the season as the ERA leader if he can complete 162 innings.
Ohtani has struck out 28.8% of batters faced this season and allowed an xERA of 2.36. He's allowed just one earned run across his last four starts, and holds a Stuff+ rating of 114 in those outings.
At the time of writing, it's unclear whether Shohei will be the DH in this game, as Dave Roberts has sporadically kept Ohtani out of the lineup on days he is pitching this season.
After managing a respectable offensive output off of Paul Skenes Tuesday, the Dodgers went to work on the Pirates bullpen during a ten-run seventh inning. The lineup is missing some notable contributors such as Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez, but the organization's absurd depth has hidden those absences.
Over the last 30 days the Dodgers have hit to a wRC+ of 125, and hold the best wRC+ in baseball versus right-handed pitching this season.
Jared Jones' eventual return was among the reasons the Pirates were angling to contend this season and became a trendy pick in the futures market leading into the year. Jones showed flashes of sky-high upside in the 2024 season before missing the entirety of the 2025 campaign after undergoing internal brace surgery.
Jones pitched to an ERA of 2.89 and struck out 11.89 batters per nine during 18 and 2/3 rehab innings in Triple-A, before an ugly season debut on May 29th versus the Twins in which he allowed seven hits and five earned runs. He bounced back with a better outing last Thursday versus the Astros, as he allowed just four hits and zero earned runs.
The most important takeaway out of Jones' initial pair of outings might be that his stuff has looked the same as it did pre-injury. He's held an average fastball velo of 98, a Stuff+ rating of 105, and a Pitching+ rating of 110. He's struck out 23.8% of batters thus far, but that mark will presumably climb upwards toward the 26.2% clip he held in 2024.
Jones threw just 74 pitches in his previous outing, but will likely be offered a higher pitch count in this matchup. And while it may not factor into the plan surrounding how much the Pirates are willing to stretch Jones in this matchup, Pittsburgh's bullpen is quite depleted currently and it would certainly love to see the flamethrower handle the bulk of this matchup.

Dodgers vs Pirates Pick, Betting Analysis
The Dodgers have struck-out only 19.2% of the time over the last 30 days, and are obviously quite capable of racking up some traffic on the basepaths. Though it's far from an ideal matchup, a strikeout total of 4.5 for Jones still looks quite low, and it will be surprising if he's not consistently sporting strikeout props set at 5.5 and 6.5 in the near future.
The Pirates will likely be willing to offer Jones around 85 pitches here as he continues to build himself up, and that's enough for me to believe backing him to record at least five strikeouts at -122 is a good bet.
Pick: Jones Over 4.5 Strikeouts -122 (FanDuel; Play to -132)
