Magic vs Pistons NBA Playoffs Game 1 Preview
Orlando Magic Betting Preview
Orlando is stubborn, I’ll give them that.
After a miserable season filled with injuries, terrible offense, inconsistent defense, and a pretty ghastly win profile, the Magic made the playoffs by beating the Hornets in their second play-in game.
They did so after collapsing and being blown out by the Celtics’ G-League team in the season finale, and after getting resoundingly worked by the Sixers without Joel Embiid.
Detroit Pistons Betting Preview
Here’s the problem: the Pistons’ starters absolutely annihilated the Magic this year.
Cade Cunningham posted plus-minuses of +27, +16, and +14 this season — meanwhile, Jalen Duren logged +18, +22, +16 in the first three games against them, and then posted a -18 when Cade didn’t play.
Orlando has simply had no answers for Detroit’s starters.
If the Pistons were entirely new to the playoffs, I’d lean Orlando — but Detroit got a run last year.
If the Magic were a team that could win with the math game, taking and making more threes, I’d lean Magic.
Magic vs Pistons Pick, Betting Analysis
Magic -8.5
The coaching edge is huge here; the Magic have just about quit on Jamahl Mosley.
The Pistons also have the edge in interior rebounding, scoring, and shot creation. They have the best player on the floor — and Detroit’s defense is tough enough to make an inconsistent offensive team like Orlando cry.
I make the spread for this game Pistons -10.4. They can win by a comfortable margin even if it’s not a blowout.
Under 219
It’s hard to cover a nearly double-digit spread in a low total game with it going under, but I think this one is ripe for it.
The Pistons only scored over 109 points once in this matchup this season (in their first meeting).
I am effectively banking on the elite Pistons defense to shut down Orlando. Ausar Thompson should handle Desmond Bane. The Pistons have size and length to throw at Paolo Banchero. Franz Wagner has multiple long athletic wings to face.
There are worse bets to make. I make this total 214.9 with playoff adjustment.
Jalen Duren Over 31.5 Points & Rebounds
The Magic give up a surprisingly high percentage in the paint and are a bottom-10 team against pick-and-roll screener scoring.
Magic vs Pistons Best Bets
- Magic -8.5 (-105)
- Under 219 (-109)
- Jalen Duren Over 31.5 Points & Rebounds (-115)
