Suns vs Trail Blazers NBA Preview
After the Suns took six of seven meetings in the series, the Trail Blazers took consecutive games at home, two days apart, in the final two meetings last season.
The Suns took the first meeting this season, 127-110, in November. This will be the fourth consecutive meeting in Portland, and it will likely come with both teams missing their star players.
Devin Booker is out for several weeks with a right ankle sprain, while Deni Avdija is doubtful with a low back strain.
However, the Suns have done a better job navigating Booker's absence, going 3-2 since he went down, including wins over the Pistons and Cavaliers.
One reason has been the play of Dillon Brooks, who has scored 20 points in each of his last two games.
Brooks may not draw much attention as an All-Star snub, but his career year should keep him in consideration as an injury replacement.
Meanwhile, Portland has dropped five games in a row, and Avdija has missed three of them.
The Trail Blazers have been held under 100 points in three of those games and rank last in the league in offensive rating during this five-game stretch. It's not unfamiliar territory, as they rank 23rd in offensive rating on the season.
However, the other end of the floor was the bigger issue on Sunday against the Cavaliers, who shot 55% from the field and scored 68 points in the paint.
The biggest beneficiary was Jarrett Allen, who had a career night with 40 points and 17 rebounds on 16-for-23 shooting.
Trail Blazers' center Donovan Clingan was a basket away from a double-double, but I'm interested to see how he responds tonight.
Clingan has been a solid defender through his first two years in the league, averaging 11.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game this season.
He'll be looking to shake off Sunday's performance, and he enters tonight's matchup with four double-doubles in his past six games.
Suns vs Trail Blazers Predictions, Betting Analysis
The Blazers have covered six of the last 10 meetings in the series, but many of those have come as double-digit underdogs.
All seven of the Suns' recent victories in the series have been by six points or fewer.
Tonight, they are favored by three points, and I will be backing them because they are better equipped to handle Booker's absence.
While both teams suffer offensively without their leading scorers, Portland's offensive rating plummets nearly 14 points without Avdija on the floor.
That will be problematic tonight because Phoenix ranks sixth in defensive rating this season. The Suns' defense should carry them to a victory.
Suns vs. Trail Blazers Best Bet: Suns -2.5 (-110)
