Cardinals vs Seahawks NFL Week 9 Preview
The Cardinals are a broken product on offense. They rank 31st in the NFL in explosive passing and are inconsistent at best when trying to establish the run. They also a bit in flux entering this game with Jeremiyah Love landing on injured reserve and Jacoby Brissett being traded to the Ravens.
It's hard to not imagine Gardner Minshew being forced into obvious passing situations against the Seahawks, who are in desperate need of a win after losing on Monday Night Football.
Over the last four seasons, Minshew has been absolutely miserable when operating under pressure. If he is forced to march the Cardinals down the field methodically without the threat of a run game, it is going to result in stalled drives and critical turnovers.
Arizona's secondary is also incredibly beat up, leaving them ill-equipped to slow down Seattle's Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
This line originally touched Seahawks -13 before plummeting down to 8.5 following the announcement that Sam Darnold is out and Drew Lock will start at quarterback.
I would argue that the Seahawks are actually a better football team with Drew Lock under center.
Lock is more mobile than Darnold and looks significantly more comfortable operating this year's offensive system. Just look at the underlying metrics: among quarterbacks with a minimum of 50 dropbacks this year, Lock ranks first in the NFL in adjusted EPA per play, sixth in Completion Percentage Over Expectation (CPOE), and sixth in Success Rate. By comparison, Darnold ranks 32nd, 33rd, and 26th in those same categories.
Lock already started against this same Arizona team earlier in the year and comfortably led Seattle to a 31-7 win. Lock went 19-for-26 passing in that game with 235 yards and three touchdowns — all to Jaxon Smith-Njigba (nine receptions, 155 yards).
The Cardinals have an atrocious pass defense that ranks 32nd in explosive passes allowed.
Cardinals vs Seahawks Prediction, Betting Analysis
The Seahawks are due for positive regression on defense in the red zone. They allow the fewest trips to the red zone in the league, but when teams get there, Seattle is inexplicably allowing an 84% touchdown rate (the worst in the NFL). That simply will not last.
Getting to tease or lay a single-digit number with Drew Lock, who has mathematically outperformed Sam Darnold across the board — against an inept Arizona defense is a gift from the market.
Pick: Seahawks -8.5 (-110)
