Rockets vs Lakers NBA Playoffs Game 1 Preview

Los Angeles Lakers Betting Preview

I know, I know. If you’ve listened to our series previews, you know where I stand regarding the Lakers long-term.

Over the course of a seven-game set, I think the Rockets’ length and pure athleticism are eventually going to overwhelm this Lakers roster. I’ve already put my money where my mouth is on that front—I gave out the Rockets at 80 cents on Kalshi earlier this week.

I think Houston wins the series, I think Ime Udoka is the better coach, and I think once he really sinks his teeth into the adjustments after a few games, L.A. is going to have major problems.

However, we aren’t betting the series outcome today. We are betting Game 1.

The first thing you have to remember—even though the Rockets are the heavy favorites in the market—is that the Lakers are the home team here.

That matters. This L.A. group has been notoriously tough in their own building all season, boasting a 61% ATS record at home. They protect that floor — and in a playoff environment, that homecourt energy is a real factor that the oddsmakers might be slightly discounting.

Beyond the venue, I'm counting on a vintage performance from LeBron James. We just saw what Steph Curry did with the whole world watching—turning back the clock and reminding everyone why he’s a legend.

Is it really a reach to ask for a throw-back performance from LeBron in Game 1? I don't think so. When the lights are brightest, those are the guys you want to be holding a ticket for.

Houston Rockets Betting Preview

From a tactical standpoint, Houston’s offense still has its limitations.

In a Game 1 setting, where things can sometimes start a bit sluggish as teams feel each other out, I expect Houston's offensive hitches to make this Lakers defense look significantly better than it actually is.

I’m not saying that defensive dominance will hold for the entire series, but for one night? I’ll bank on the Lakers' veteran savvy to muck things up.

Then, there’s the coaching trend. I have a lot of respect for Ime Udoka, but his historical record in series openers is eye-opening. Across his coaching career with the Celtics and the Rockets, Udoka is just 2-3 straight up and a dismal 1-4 ATS in Game 1 environments.

Udoka is a coach who wins on adjustments, not necessarily on the initial punch.

Rockets vs Lakers Pick, Betting Analysis

I’m taking the Lakers +5.5, and I’m also putting a small sprinkle on the Lakers Moneyline at +170.

It’s the best price out there, it fits the historical context of how we handicap these spots, and it gives us that extra upside if LeBron decides to truly take over the building tonight.

Pick: Lakers +5.5 (-115)
