The Chargers entered this season with many questions, particularly with new head coach Jim Harbaugh at the helm. Fresh off a national title at Michigan, Harbaugh has NFL experience, sporting a 44-19-1 record with the 49ers. Under his leadership, the Chargers have started 2-0, defeating the Raiders (22-10) and Panthers (26-3). Despite their early success, they still trail the Chiefs in odds to win the AFC West at +390, and they’re +4000 for the Super Bowl. However, Herbert’s limited practice due to an ankle injury raises concerns. Although expected to play, his passing stats (274 yards, 67.4% completion, 3/1 TD/INT) aren’t eye-popping. The ground game is led by J.K. Dobbins with 266 yards (9.9 YPC), but the aerial attack, with Quentin Johnston’s 89 yards and two TDs, lacks explosiveness.
Defensively, the Chargers have been stellar, surrendering only 6.5 points per game, the league's best, and boasting a +1 turnover margin. Their defense has dominated the red zone, holding opponents to a 0% success rate, creating a massive challenge for opposing offenses.
On the other side, the Steelers, despite being written off in the AFC North, have started 2-0 under Mike Tomlin, securing gritty wins against the Falcons (18-10) and Broncos (13-6). Even though they’re first in the division, oddsmakers still see them as a +270 longshot to win the North. Justin Fields has stepped up in Russell Wilson's absence, but his modest numbers (273 passing yards, 69.8% completion, 1 TD) and the lack of vertical threats in the offense, such as George Pickens’ 114 yards, haven’t sparked much firepower. Najee Harris has been serviceable with 139 rushing yards (3.8 YPC), but the offense overall has been underwhelming, scoring just one touchdown in two games.
Defensively, Pittsburgh has been nearly as dominant as the Chargers, allowing just 8.0 points per game, second in the NFL, and leading the league with a +2.5 turnover margin per game. Their 100% red zone defensive success rate mirrors Los Angeles, further limiting scoring opportunities.
With the two best defenses in the league and a clear lack of vertical threats, the under is the smart play here. Both teams will rely on the ground game, with limited passing options and mid-tier quarterbacks. Expect long, slow drives, punts, and limited scoring in a game that could look like a throwback to old-school football. This matchup’s offensive limitations and elite defenses should keep this total well under.

Too low for Warren, who was the more impressive back last week. Now, I don’t expect Arthur Smith to do anything rational, but the Steelers will run the ball. The Chargers run defense seems legit, but they’ve also faced two very sub-par running offenses. This game should be played close throughout (no matter who is QB’ing either team).
