Florida Atlantic Betting Stats & 2019 Season Profile

  • Season Record: 9-3
  • Against-the-Spread Record: 8-4
  • Conference: Conference USA
  • Offense Yards Per Play Rank: 68
  • Defense Yards Per Play Rank: 55
  • S&P+ Special Teams Rank: 49

Analysis: Some of the shine wore off Lane Kiffin’s FAU program following a 5-7 season in 2018, but the Owls picked things back up in 2019, winning Conference USA. And then Kiffin bolted for Ole Miss. FAU went 9-3 with its only losses coming to Ohio State, UCF and a narrow one to Marshall. The Owls defense really took a step forward, going from 82nd in defensive SP+ to 47th this season. The offense wasn’t quite at the level of the 2017 team that went 11-3, but it’s about FBS Average. It scored at least 31 points in FAU’s final six games and averaged at least 6.5 yards per play in four of them, but those games came against a pretty light schedule. — Steve Petrella

SMU Betting Stats & 2019 Season Profile

  • Season Record: 10-2
  • Against-the-Spread Record: 7-4-1
  • Conference: AAC
  • Offense Yards Per Play Rank: 36
  • Defense Yards Per Play Rank: 73
  • S&P+ Special Teams Rank: 113

Analysis: The story of the year in the Group of Five is still SMU, despite a few close losses down the stretch. The Mustangs came out guns blazing on offense under Sonny Dykes, ranking 28th in SP+ on offense and fourth in seconds per play. Every Saturday felt like a shootout, evidenced by their first seven games going over the total. The offense cooled off a little down the stretch, but the defense improved in the final two games — a close loss to Navy in which SMU was stopped at the goal line in the final minutes when trying to tie the game, and a 37-20 victory over Tulane. — Steve Petrella
