Which Louisiana parishes allow sports betting?

Sports betting is permitted in 55 of Louisiana's 64 parishes. It is not permitted in these nine, where voters rejected it in the November 2020 referendum:

Every other parish in the state approved it, including all of the major population centres — Orleans, East Baton Rouge, Jefferson, Caddo, Lafayette, Calcasieu, St Tammany and the rest.

A warning about lists you may find elsewhere

Several widely-shared versions of this list are wrong. Bossier, Lincoln and Vernon are frequently named as holdout parishes and all three voted yes — Bossier by 66.15%, which is unsurprising given the casino cluster in Bossier City. If a list includes any of those three, it is not reliable. The table above is drawn from the certified parish-by-parish results.

Why can I not bet in my parish when someone in New Orleans can?

Because Louisiana did not make one statewide decision. Senate Bill 130, sponsored by Senator Cameron Henry, put the question to voters in each of the 64 parishes separately on November 3, 2020. Where a parish voted yes, betting became lawful there once the state built the regulatory framework. Where it voted no, the prohibition stayed.

So this is not your app malfunctioning and it is not a licensing gap. It is a different legal answer on either side of a parish line, decided by the people who live there. Your friend in Orleans Parish is in one of the 55; if your bet is being refused at home, you may be in one of the nine.

Does the restriction apply to retail as well as online?

Yes. The parish vote governs sports wagering in that parish, so a non-approved parish has neither app betting nor a retail sportsbook. In approved parishes both are available, subject to the operator having a licensed presence.

Can I bet if I travel into an approved parish?

Yes. Eligibility follows where you physically are at the moment you place the wager, not where you live or where your account was registered. Someone resident in Winn Parish can drive into Rapides or Ouachita, place a bet, and it is entirely lawful.

Might the nine parishes change their minds?

They now have a route to. House Bill 72, enacted in 2026, authorizes any parish where sports wagering was not permitted as of January 1, 2026 to call and conduct its own election on the question. That applies to exactly those nine — Caldwell, Catahoula, Franklin, Jackson, LaSalle, Sabine, Union, West Carroll and Winn.

Worth noting how close several of them were. Union Parish rejected it by 38 votes and Jackson by 97. On those margins a revote is a genuine prospect rather than a formality, and this section will need updating whenever one is called.

And a second parish map most people miss

Louisiana ran the same exercise for daily fantasy sports two years earlier, under House Bill 484 in 2018, and got a different answer: 47 parishes approved fantasy contests and 17 rejected them.

So Louisiana has two parish maps, not one. A parish can permit sports betting but not fantasy sports, or the reverse. If you use both products, check both — the fact that your parish allows one tells you nothing about the other.

Which apps are licensed in Louisiana, and how do they compare?

Mobile betting launched on January 28, 2022 with six operators live on day one: FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, Barstool and BetRivers. The market has grown since. Every legal operator is licensed by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, which publishes the current list — if a site is not on it, it is not licensed here.

Which Louisiana sportsbook should you use?

FanDuel for most people; DraftKings if you bet deep props or want markets FanDuel does not carry. The genuinely correct answer is both, and in Louisiana that is easier than in most states because all four major books are licensed here.

Retail betting: Harrah's, Baton Rouge and the racetracks

Retail sportsbooks operate at licensed casinos and racetracks across the approved parishes, including in downtown New Orleans and the Baton Rouge area. Retail hours and NFL Sunday arrangements vary by property and by season, so check the venue directly rather than relying on a third-party page — that is the one detail most likely to be out of date wherever you read it.

Retail suits you if you want cash payouts at the window, a room with screens and the atmosphere of a Sunday crowd. The app suits you if you want market depth, live betting and price comparison — a retail board carries a fraction of what the app does.

Bonuses, rollover and whether any of it is worth it

Do Louisiana bonuses actually pay off, or are they a gimmick?

They have real value, but far less than the headline number, and the honest answer depends on the mechanic rather than the size.

• Bonus bets do not return your stake. Win a $50 bonus bet at even money and you receive $50, not $100. That alone makes a bonus bet worth roughly half its face value.

The comparison that matters is not headline value but expected value after rollover, minimum odds and expiry. A $200 first-bet offer with no rollover will usually beat a $1,000 deposit match at 10x.

Can I stack welcome offers across several Louisiana books?

Yes, and it is the single most rational thing a new bettor can do here. Each licensed operator offers its own welcome promotion once per person, and claiming several is entirely permitted — you are opening separate accounts with separate companies.

The practical downsides are worth naming. You will have several balances to track and several sets of terms to meet, each with its own expiry. Bonus funds are usually not withdrawable until rollover is complete, so money can be tied up across four apps at once. And it only works once — after the welcome offers are used, you are competing for ongoing promotions like everyone else. Do not open an account you would not otherwise want just to claim a bonus.

Does line shopping actually improve long-term returns?

Yes, and it is the only item on this page that reliably compounds. Prices on the same game differ between books, and the difference is frequently half a point on a spread or several cents on a moneyline. Taking the better number every time is worth more over a season than any welcome offer, and it costs nothing but the fifteen seconds of checking.

That is the honest hierarchy: line shopping first, ongoing promotions second, welcome bonuses a distant third.

Troubleshooting, including the parish-line problem

The app says I am not in an approved parish, but I am.

Work through these in order.

1. Confirm which parish you are actually in. Parish lines do not follow city limits or highways, and being near a boundary is not being across it. This is the most common cause by a distance.

2. Turn off any VPN. It will block you even when you are genuinely in an approved parish, and corporate phones sometimes run one without the user noticing.

3. Set location permissions to precise rather than approximate, and grant them to the app specifically.

4. Close the app fully and reopen it. Geolocation readings cache, and a stale one persists after you move.

5. Switch between wifi and cellular. Router-based location can place you somewhere your phone knows you are not.

6. On a laptop, install or reinstall the operator's geolocation plugin — desktop betting will not work without it, which is the usual answer to "I cannot verify my location in New Orleans on my laptop."

What happens if I cross a parish line mid-session?

Bets already placed are unaffected and settle normally wherever you are. What changes is your ability to place new ones: the check runs at the moment of each wager, so if you drive from an approved parish into a non-approved one mid-session, the next bet will be refused. Driving back restores it.

A retail sportsbook would not honour the odds I saw in the app — why?

Because they are two separate books, and this is the most-misunderstood thing about a state with both.

An operator's retail and online operations are licensed and run separately. The app carries a live price that reprices continuously as money comes in and as news moves the market. A retail board is a posted price, updated on a slower cycle and sometimes manually. When a ticket is written at the counter, the contract is the price on the board at that moment — not the price on your phone.

So the retail book is not refusing to honour anything. It never offered your app price. If you want the app number, place the bet in the app. If the board price is better, take it at the window — that happens too, and it is one reason to check both if you are already at the venue.

My ID keeps getting rejected

Usually a mismatch rather than a problem with the document. The name on the account must match the ID exactly — middle names, hyphens and maiden names are the frequent culprits. Check the address matches your ID or a recent utility bill, that the ID has not expired, and that the photo is flat, well lit and shows all four corners. If it keeps failing, support can normally accept a manual upload — a passport plus a utility bill usually clears it.

I claimed a bonus and the bonus bets never arrived

The usual causes, in order: the qualifying bet was below the minimum odds; you bet before the deposit cleared, so it did not count as the qualifying wager; a promo code was required at registration and cannot be applied retrospectively; you used a deposit method excluded from the offer; or you had a previous account with that operator, since welcome offers are once per person rather than once per account. Contact support with the bet ID before the offer window closes.

My withdrawal is taking too long

Identity verification incomplete is the most common reason — operators will take deposits before full verification but will not release funds. After that: withdrawing to a method you have never deposited with, which anti-money-laundering rules generally prevent on a first withdrawal; unsettled bets or outstanding rollover; being below the minimum withdrawal; or it is simply still processing, since bank transfers commonly take one to three business days and look stalled on day one.

Getting started in Louisiana

You must be 21 or over and physically inside an approved parish. You do not need to be a Louisiana resident — visitors can bet, which matters given New Orleans tourist volume.

7. Check your parish against the list above before anything else.

8. Download the app and register. You will need your full legal name, date of birth, home address and the last four digits of your Social Security number, and possibly a photo ID upload.

9. Deposit. Online banking and debit are the most reliable; check the fee position before using a card.

10. Place the bet. Find the market, tap the odds, the selection lands in your bet slip, enter your stake and submit. The app confirms your location before accepting.

For a visitor staying downtown: Orleans Parish is approved, so the app works throughout the French Quarter, the CBD and the Garden District. Register and fund the account before you travel if you can — verification is easier on a stable connection than on hotel wifi.

Taxes on Louisiana betting winnings

Louisiana taxes individual income at a flat 3% for taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2025, and a 3% rate also applies where Louisiana withholding is required on gambling winnings. Federal tax applies on top.

If I am visiting and win in New Orleans, do I owe Louisiana tax?

Potentially yes, and this catches visitors out. Gambling winnings earned in Louisiana are Louisiana-sourced income. A non-resident who receives gambling winnings from Louisiana sources and who is required to file a federal income tax return must file a Louisiana return — Form IT-540B — reporting the Louisiana income earned.

So a weekend in New Orleans that produces a significant win can create a Louisiana filing obligation even if you have never lived in the state. Your home state will generally give you a credit for tax paid to Louisiana, but the filing itself is on you.

Federal tax, including the 2026 change

• 24% federal withholding applies to winnings of $5,000 or more where the payout is at least 300 times the stake.

• From January 1, 2026 the general W-2G reporting threshold is $2,000.

• Also from January 1, 2026, gambling losses are deductible at only 90% of value, still capped at your winnings — so you can owe federal tax on a break-even year.

• You report gross winnings, not net profit, and you only get the loss deduction if you itemize. Most filers take the standard deduction and get no offset at all.

How much to set aside: as a rough working figure, treat 3% for Louisiana plus your federal marginal rate as the floor, and remember that withholding at source only happens on the larger single wins. Keep W-2G forms, records of what was withheld, and dates, stakes and outcomes. App history is stored and exportable, which is a genuine advantage over retail slips.

Is betting in Louisiana actually profitable for a casual bettor?

For most people, no — and it is worth saying plainly on a page that also lists bonuses. Louisiana Sports Betting Revenue

House Bill 697 set the tax rates for both retail and mobile sports books. Mobile sportsbooks are taxed at 15%, while retail sports books are taxed on their profit at 10%. This is a fairly small rate compared to states like New York, which implements a tax rate of 51% on sports book operators. This tax revenue will benefit various state causes. Where the tax money goes, and what has changed since launch

Retail sports betting is taxed at 10% of net revenue and online at 21.5%. The online rate was originally 15%; Governor Jeff Landry signed House Bill 639 on June 18, 2025, raising it to 21.5% and directing the increase into a new fund for the state's Division 1 universities.

That is an unusual arrangement worth understanding: Louisiana now taxes sportsbooks partly to fund the athletic departments of the college programmes people are betting on. It also means a rate rise arrived at the same time the Gaming Control Board removed college player props — two changes to the college side of the market inside a year.

Tools and self-exclusion

• Every licensed Louisiana operator must offer deposit limits, wagering limits, time limits and account self-exclusion.
