What is it not legal to bet on in NJ? 

Betting on college teams from New Jersey is not legal. Even if it’s being played elsewhere. While Rutgers is the only FBS football team in New Jersey, there is a host of Division I basketball programs with lines on their games, including Fairleigh Dickinson, Monmouth, NJIT, Princeton, Rider, Saint Peter’s and Seton Hall.

There is no betting on college events taking place in New Jersey. Any neutral-site games, NCAA Tournament, bowl games, etc., happening in New Jersey cannot be wagered on. New Jersey does not frequently host NCAA Tournament regionals, and there are no active college bowl games there as of 2026.

That's the trade in a futures bet: a small stake, a large multiple, a long lock-up, and a single narrow path to a return.

Common Sports Betting Markets in NJ

• Moneyline - a straight bet on who wins. The simplest market on the board and where most bettors start.
• Point spread - the favorite gives up a set margin and the underdog receives it, leveling the market to roughly even odds. A -6.5 favorite must win by seven or more.
