San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert suffered a knee injury on the team's second drive of the game on Sunday that ultimately knocked him out of the season-opening matchup.

Unfortunately for Mostert and the 49ers, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that San Francisco's starting running back has chipped cartilage in his knee and will miss around eight weeks of action.

Rookie Trey Sermon, who was a surprising healthy scratch on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, could take on a chunk of the workload with Mostert out, while Elijah Mitchell becomes an interesting fantasy football waiver wire add this week.

The Action Network's Samantha Previte offered her two cents regarding what might be a touch backfield to decipher:

"Elijah Mitchell at 8% rostered will be a top waiver add after recording 19 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. JaMycal Hasty may be worth adding at 1% rostered in deeper leagues.

Hasty played a rotating role with Jerick McKinnon while Mostert was sidelined last season.

I'd temper expectations for Mitchell — or any 49ers not named George Kittle — as trustworthy week-to-week starters in light of Shanahan's mercurial nature."

Mitchell did step in admirably against the Lions in Week 1, finishing with 104 yard on 19 carries, including a 38-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.

Hasty made the most of his single carry on Sunday, punching in a three-yard touchdown run late in the first half.

San Francisco will travel to Philadelphia in Week 2 to take on the Eagles, who surrendered just six points to the Atlanta Falcons in their season-opener.
