Lafayette Leopards Betting Preview

Lafayette has put together a nice FCS season and — after an opening week loss at Bowling Green — has rattled off five wins in their last six games.

Dean DeNobile has been steady at quarterback and has completed 69% of his passes with 11 touchdown passes. The ground game has shone in this rush-heavy attack as Kente Edwards and Ethan Weber have combined for 1038 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns between them.

Lafayette’s defense lost plenty of production from 2024, and the early result against FCS competition was that this team found itself in shootouts quite often. The stop unit surrendered 26 points against Stonehill, 37 against Georgetown, and 38 against Princeton early on before playing a bit better the past few weeks.

The secondary is undersized and will struggle to cover the skill position players for Oregon State in this game. While the aggregate rushing numbers look decent for Lafayette, the competition faced has primarily contained very pedestrian rushing attacks. Columbia graduated their best running back, Princeton’s best back transferred to FBS, and both Fordham and Bucknell boast pass-happy offenses.

Oregon State Beavers Betting Preview

To say that this season has not gone as expected for Oregon State would be a massive understatement.

The Beavers are 0-7, and head coach Trent Bray has been told to hit the road. Interim head coach Rob Akey has plenty of experience both as a position coach and head coach at the FBS level and will serve this team well during the home stretch of an otherwise struggling season.

The bottom fell out for Oregon State in a 39-14 home loss last week against Wake Forest. The Beaver offense continued to turn the ball over at a high rate and was shut out through three quarters. Quarterback Maalik Murphy completed just 13 of 30 passes and did not throw a touchdown.

The Beavers ran 82 offensive plays against Wake Forest, and only two of them were classified as explosive. The offensive line has not played well this season, as it's allowed a significant amount of offensive havoc against them, and the team's rushing average sits at 3.17 yards per carry.

While this is a lost season in the record column, I am confident that Akey can get this team playing hard and competing to build momentum for the future.

Akey is a defensive-minded coach and is almost assured to improve this group over time, but that improvement will be incremental in nature to start. Oregon State has allowed way too many chunk plays, specifically against the pass. Opposing quarterbacks are completing 61% and the Beavers have given up 18 touchdown passes this season.

There is a lot of work to do.

Lafayette vs Oregon State Pick, Betting Analysis

Oregon State is desperate for a win, and this team had been competing hard prior to last week.

This line opened Oregon State -20.5 early in the week and has been on the move, with -24 widely available.

The total sits at 54.5, and I think there is value in the Over.

Oregon State is going to put on a show offensively, and it has the weapons capable of putting up a big point total against the Leopards.

Maalik Murphy should have a massive passing day against the Lafayette secondary that grades out as a middling Patriot League unit, per PFF. Trent Walker should have a ton of passes thrown his way, and he is capable of explosive plays from anywhere on the field.

Lafayette grades out as the fourth-worst tackling unit in the Patriot League, and I would suspect the Beavers to get their running backs into the second level of the Lafayette defense here. Anthony Hankerson should explode against the defense.

DeNobile is going to throw the ball around for Lafayette, which boasts one of the top offensive units in the Patriot League. Still, this group is fairly balanced in their overall offensive approach. Oregon State is a bottom-20 team in FBS in tackling grades, per PFF. Kente Edwards is averaging 8.2 yards per carry on the ground this season, and Ethan Weber is averaging over 5.5 yards per carry. These backs can create missed tackles, and over half of their production has come after first contact.

We should see plenty of points.

Lafayette has had a propensity to play in shootouts, and its defense will wear down against the superior athletes Oregon State has on its team.

I would expect motivation for Oregon State to exert some frustration for their 0-7 start and have a little fun here at home on Saturday night.

Pick: Over 55.5 or Better
