Massachusetts Sports Betting Tax Rate

Massachusetts taxes retail sports betting revenue at 15% and online sports betting revenue at 20%.

The state generally prohibits betting on Massachusetts college teams, except when they participate in eligible multi-team tournaments. Sportsbook operators also cannot deduct promotional credits from taxable revenue.

Sports betting tax revenue is distributed among several state funds, with 9% allocated to the Public Health Trust Fund to support problem gambling prevention, treatment and research.

What does Massachusetts sports betting give you?

Massachusetts sports betting has very practical differences from the rest of the country. This is because the MGC has written consumer rules no other regulator has, all designed to give players greater protection. There are three core differences that work for you as a Massachusetts sports bettor.

If your account gets limited, the book has 48 hours to tell you why

If an operator cuts your maximum stake or shuts you out of particular markets, it must notify you within 48 hours, give a specific and individual reason, and identify which markets you have lost access to.

A generic line about trading decisions is not allowed.

On February 26, 2026, the MGC voted 5–0 to adopt this rule, the first regulation in the United States requiring a sportsbook to explain a betting limit. It took effect June 1, 2026.

If your stake sizes drop and no notice arrives within 48 hours, that is itself a compliance failure — raise it with the operator in writing before escalating.

Withdrawals have a legal deadline, not a customer-service target

Operators must honor a withdrawal within five business days from the request, or ten business days from when you submit any tax paperwork the law requires.

While many sportsbooks attempt to pay out as fast as possible to keep players happy, this law at least gives you the protection of knowing they must pay out your withdrawal, when that must happen, and that you can take action if they do not.

There is a route to the regulator, and the fines are public

An unresolved account dispute can be forwarded to the Commission by either you or the operator, in writing and with supporting evidence, such as screenshots, bet IDs, timestamps and correspondence.

Each operator's House Rules must separately explain how complaints are filed, resolved and escalated to the Commission, must be posted prominently and dated, and previous versions must be supplied on written request, which matters if a rule changed between when you placed a bet and when it settled.

If something goes wrong you have the ability to seek the state's help. Not every state offers that, and it is a real benefit to Massachusetts players.

Massachusetts also publishes what its books have got wrong. Almost every penalty involves a market that should never have been open in this state.

What am I not allowed to bet on in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts has a few banned betting markets right now. Most are consistent across the country, however, so you're not missing out. It is always good to be aware of these ahead of signing up.

The Boston Celtics are one of the NBA’s most successful franchises and raised banner No. 18 after defeating the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals. The rebuild year went far better than expected, Boston finished 56–26 with the NBA's stingiest defense at 107.2 points allowed per game, Jaylen Brown averaged a career-high 28.7, and the Celtics claimed a 12th consecutive playoff berth and fifth straight division title. A seven-game first-round loss to the 76ers sadly ended it early. Mazzulla still won Coach of the Year at 37, the youngest winner since 1975.

The Revolution are still chasing a first MLS Cup, having lost all five finals they have reached, and 2025 was a low point: an 11th-place finish in the Eastern Conference, 23rd overall, and the dismissal of head coach Caleb Porter with four games left.

I big news for the team the Kraft Group reached agreements with Everett and Boston to build an approximately 25,000-seat, roughly $500 million soccer-specific stadium and a four-acre waterfront park on a decommissioned power plant site along the Mystic River. The project still needs environmental and planning approvals, and the Revolution will continue at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough in the meantime.

The Minutemen then went 0–12, the only winless team in the FBS and just the 19th program ever to finish a season without a win, extending a losing streak that now stands at 16 games. The 2026 season opening at Rutgers on September 3 with home games being played at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

Merrimack has become one of the more impressive small-budget programs in the Northeast under Joe Gallo, now in his tenth season. After winning the NEC tournament in 2023 while still ineligible for the postseason as a reclassifying program, the Warriors moved to the MAAC and promptly won the 2025–26 regular-season title at 23–11 overall and 17–3 in conference play.

Veteran head coach Bill Coen is looking to lead Northeastern to their third NCAA Tournament appearance during his long tenure. UMass Lowell is still searching for a first NCAA Tournament appearance since moving to Division I in 2013, despite genuine highs under Pat Duquette — including a 26–8 season in 2022–23 and 22–10 in 2023–24. The River Hawks went 15–18 overall and 9–7 in America East play in 2025–26, Duquette's 13th season, and now play at the Kennedy Family Athletic Complex after years at the Costello Athletic Center.

Can I bet on Boston College, UMass, Harvard or Northeastern?

Normally no. Massachusetts does not allow gambling on collegiate events involving one or more college teams from the state. However, this does not apply when those teams are in a collegiate tournament. This is defined by the MGC as a series of collegiate events involving four or more teams making up a single unit of competition.

Four or more teams is the bar. It is not simply 'if it is the postseason' or 'any big game', at least four NCAA programs must be taking part.

The individual-athlete prohibition is broader than the in-state rule and often missed. Any wager whose outcome depends on an individual athlete's performance is banned, in-play included, for every college team in the country.

Massachusetts adopted it at launch in January 2023, more than a year before the NCAA began pressing states to follow.

In September 2024, the Commission voted 4–0 to write the ban on individual college award markets explicitly into the Sports Wagering Catalog. So when BC or UMass reaches the NCAA tournament, game lines open but player props do not

Massachusetts is small, its population is concentrated near its borders, and large numbers of people cross into New Hampshire or Rhode Island daily. Three regulators, two age limits and three college rules apply within a forty-minute drive of Boston. Here is what changes when you cross.

Can I use a Massachusetts app in New Hampshire or Rhode Island?

No. Mobile wagers may only be placed by someone physically inside Massachusetts, and the moment your phone shows you across the state line the app stops accepting bets. New Hampshire law is written the same way, voiding any wager placed from outside that state.

Can I bet in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts?

Yes, you can. But you need different accounts. Residency is irrelevant to where you may bet; being physically present is enough. A New Hampshire resident standing in Boston can bet with any of the seven Massachusetts books, provided they are 21 or older. The same person at home in Nashua can only use DraftKings.

Be aware of the age gap, however. In New Hampshire anyone 18 or older can bet. Massachusetts requires 21.

A 19-year-old with a legal New Hampshire DraftKings account who opens the app on the Red Line is not merely blocked — they are below the legal age in the jurisdiction they are standing in.

Is it worth driving to New Hampshire or Rhode Island to bet?

For almost everyone, no. New Hampshire has one operator paying 51% of revenue to the state; Rhode Island's split sends 51% to the state and 17% to Bally's, leaving 32% with the sportsbook.

High revenue shares and no competition, as in NH and RI, only make for worse prices. Massachusetts has seven books competing on the same games, so you can shop lines, trying to find the best prices or promos — something you cannot do across the border.

Can a Massachusetts self-exclusion be reversed?

No, it cannot be reversed. You cannot shorten the terms of the exclusion either.

You may extend or renew at any time, if you wish. You may not reduce the period. That is the point of the program, and it is designed to be difficult to undo in a moment of impulse.

You can, however, remove the block at the end of your term, but it is not automatic.

Your exclusion continues indefinitely until you complete a reinstatement session with a designated agent and file the Petition for Removal.
