Following a period of intense volatility during which the candidates alternated leadership at the top of the prediction markets, the race for the Texas Senate seat appears to be tilting decisively toward the Democrats.

The latest Texas Senate polls show Democratic candidate James Talarico holding a concrete lead over Republican Ken Paxton. The question now is whether these numbers are definitive or if there is still room for a surprise. Meanwhile, Kalshi traders continue to project the trajectory of one of the most critical races of this election cycle.

Texas Senate Polls: Talarico vs. Paxton

Recent Texas Senate polls show James Talarico holding the lead.

The University of Houston published its poll, showing the Democratic candidate with 48% of the vote, two percentage points ahead of Ken Paxton. The remaining 6% was split between Brown and the "Don't know" option.

Meanwhile, in a poll conducted for CBS News by pollster YouGov, Talarico maintained the same lead, though the total numbers differed. The Democrat garnered 51% to his rival's 49%.

While that two-percentage-point lead in a Senate poll is hardly a definitive margin that rules out a surprise, the truth is that in historically Republican territory, few expected to see Talarico sitting atop just days away from Election Day.

Texas Senate Race Odds on Kalshi

Prediction markets certainly align with these polling trends, displaying even greater confidence in a Talarico victory. Right now, the Democrat leads the "Texas Senate Winner?" board on Kalshi with a 64% implied probability, marking his all-time high.

Up until September 11, it was Ken Paxton who intermittently held the lead on the trading board, though he steadily lost ground to his rival. On that day, the roles reversed, and Talarico has been trading at the top ever since, with Yes shares trading at 64 cents.

Why Texas Matters for the Senate Majority

With Republicans holding a narrow Senate majority, the party in power cannot afford high-profile defensive slips. Historically viewed as a solid GOP stronghold, a Democratic flip in Texas would drastically alter the playing field, forcing Republicans to make up ground in tougher battleground states.

At the same time, Republicans cannot afford to surrender a territory they have historically dominated just two weeks out from Election Day. This reality forces the GOP to maintain massive late-stage ad spending, effectively capping how much capital they can deploy across other contested battlegrounds.

Democrats recognize they are standing in a historic position: Texans have not elected a Democratic senator since 1988. They also know that a two-percentage-point lead is far from a decisive margin, and that a historically Republican electorate can easily "come back home" when it comes time to cast the final ballots.

Can Texas Senate Polls Be Trusted?

Indeed, the latest polls for this race align on numbers and reflect the overall trajectory of the contest between Talarico and Paxton across prediction markets. To provide a broader perspective, even traditionally Republican-leaning pollsters show Talarico sitting at the top.

It is crucial to remember that polls offer a snapshot of a specific moment and demographic. While they provide a clear look into public opinion and the prevailing political climate, they are far from an absolute guarantee, especially in a race this tight and volatile.

Key Dates Before Nov. 3

For now, no debate dates have been set, though Talarico recently challenged Paxton to a debate hosted by TMZ. Trump is expected to make a stop in Texas during the final days of October to provide a final boost to GOP candidates, particularly Ken Paxton.

For registered voters choosing to cast their ballots early, the period runs from October 19 to 30. For those utilizing mail-in options, local election clerks must receive all ballot applications by October 23. On Election Day itself, polling places across Texas precincts remain open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Is Trading the Texas Senate Race Legal?

Trading on political outcomes is legal across most U.S. states when done via CFTC-regulated prediction markets. Because these platforms are overseen by federal authorities, they are not regulated as state-level gambling.
