Ahead of the 2026 Men's World Cup — hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico — The Action Network set out to find out how AI would predict the outcome of the tournament. The AI model was fed detailed, structured data on all 48 qualified nations — a total of over 1,200 data points across 25 variables per team — giving it enough information to make data-driven predictions for every match from the group stage all the way to the final.
Predicted Winner According to AI
According to AI, France, Spain, England, and Argentina are predicted to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament.
Subsequently, France is expected to beat Argentina in the final and become the champion of the 2026 World Cup — a rematch of the iconic 2022 Qatar final, this time with a different outcome. AI justified its choice by highlighting France's world-number-one ranking, their squad value of €1.48 billion (the highest of any nation in the tournament), Kylian Mbappé's exceptional individual form, and Didier Deschamps' 14 years of tournament management experience — all combining to give France a decisive edge over the reigning champions.
You can see the entire AI-predicted bracket of the tournament below, alongside the predictions for the group stages and Round of 32. Feel free to keep reading to learn about the entire process in detail.

'Dark Horses' of the Tournament
Additionally, AI was asked to identify the top five dark horse teams — nations whose data profile suggests they are capable of significantly outperforming expectations and making a deep run into the latter stages of the tournament.
Norway was named the most likely dark horse, with AI pointing to Erling Haaland's extraordinary 16-goal season, Martin Ødegaard's 7 assists, a SofaScore team rating of 7.29, and a qualifying record of W7 D1 L0 — all combining to make Norway one of the most complete sides in the tournament despite their modest World Cup history. Norway was followed by Austria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Morocco, and DR Congo, respectively.

The Process
For each of the 48 qualified nations, AI was given structured data across 25 variables — covering tournament context, recent form, qualifying performance, World Cup history, squad quality, key players, coaching profile, and logistics. In total, AI was fed over 1,200 data points to inform its predictions.
Specifically, for each team, AI was given:
Tournament Context: Group assignment (A–L), Ranking (June 2026 edition), confederation, and host nation status.
Recent Form: Last 10 international match results (W–D–L), goals scored and conceded, and SofaScore average team rating.
Qualifying Campaign: Full qualifying record (W–D–L), goals scored, conceded, and goal difference, plus the qualifying path taken.
Continental Performance: Best finish in the last two editions of the team's confederation tournament (e.g., UEFA Euro, Copa América, AFCON, AFC Asian Cup, CONCACAF Gold Cup).
World Cup History: Total appearances, best ever finish, most recent tournament result, and all-time World Cup record (P, W, D, L, GF, GA, GD).
Squad Quality & Depth: Total squad market value (€M), average squad age, and percentage of players based outside their home league — all based on the confirmed 26-man squad.
Key Players of the Season: Top 3 goalscorers and top 3 assist providers from the 2025/26 club season.
Coach Profile: Years in charge of the national team and major career achievements.
Logistics: Pre-tournament friendly schedule, club season end date for the majority of the squad, and travel distance from home country to group stage venues.
After being fed all the data, AI predicted the outcome of all 12 group stages, identifying the top two qualifiers per group along with the best third-placed teams advancing to the Round of 32. The full bracket was then filled in round by round — Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and the Final — with AI predicting each fixture one round at a time, using the full data profile of both teams in each match.
AI (Claude Sonnet 4.6) provided detailed, data-driven justifications for every single prediction — 57 pages and 19,000 words of matchup-by-matchup reasoning.
