Tigers vs Cubs MLB Betting Preview

Detroit Tigers Betting Preview

Blowout loss on Tuesday aside, the Tigers have gone 24-14 since June 1, playing their way back into the AL Wild Card picture in what remains a relatively soft race. Even so, Tarik Skubal remains the premier trade chip available ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, and it's entirely possible that Friday's start could be his last in a Tigers uniform.

Detroit has been much more productive offensively during its 24-14 run, as it holds a wRC+ of 109 and has slugged .449. Dillon Dingler has led the way, slugging .634 with a .999 OPS in that span, while Riley Greene has also been in strong form with a .960 OPS over the same stretch.

Dingler owns reverse splits, making this an intriguing matchup against right-hander Colin Rea, who has allowed plenty of hard contact this season. Dingler has thrived against right-handed pitching, slugging .579 with a 156 wRC+. He's also struck out at a lower rate versus righties while producing hard contact 41.1% of the time.

Keider Montero appears to offer an edge over Rea, which is the key reason this matchup is priced quite evenly despite the Cubs being the superior side overall. Montero holds a 3.47 xERA this season, and over his last 10 appearances (including some long relief work), has pitched to a 2.50 ERA with a 3.31 xERA.

Chicago Cubs Betting Preview

Based on his underlying profile, Rea's 4.74 ERA across 100 2/3 innings appears to be a fair reflection of his form this season. He holds an xERA of 5.44 as well as an xFIP of 4.73. He's been hard-hit 40.2% of the time and is in the 17th percentile in barrel rate. Across his last 41 1/3 innings, Rea has remained in comparable form with a 4.79 ERA and 5.21 xFIP.

Rea has not been effective versus batters from either side and has let righties in particular slug .448 while allowing a 5.32 xFIP. He also holds a strikeout rate of just 15.6% against righties. To some extent, Chicago's elite defense has helped mask some of those issues, with Rea marginally outperforming his expected batting average (.274 xBA), and things may be even worse for Rea pitching in front of a more average unit.

Tigers vs Cubs Pick, Betting Analysis

This seems to be a good spot to ride with Dingler to remain productive, as he's racked up three homers and six hits in the first two matchups of the series. Dating back to the start of June, he's been among the best hitters in the league and has hit right-handed pitchers quite well in that span.

Rea allows plenty of hard contact and generates very little swing-and-miss, and considering the matchup, DraftKings' price of +135 for Dingler to record over 1.5 total bases seems to offer plenty of value.

Pick: Dillon Dingler Over 1.5 Total Bases (+135, DraftKings | Play to +120)
