Mariners vs Yankees MLB Betting Preview
The Mariners have an embarrassment of riches in the pitching department. They’ll send their best pitcher, Logan Gilbert, to the mound in the series finale from the Bronx.
Gilbert is the model of consistency for a non-star-level arm, boasting a 3.42 ERA with a 3.71 xERA and a 3.53 FIP.
Although Gilbert has seen a decrease in his K/9, from 11.89 last year to 9.37 this year, it’s led to him pitching deeper into games. He already surpassed last season’s inning total in two fewer starts. So Seattle can rely on him for six or seven innings instead of a consistent five.
The issue that currently has the Mariners outside of the playoff picture is their porous lineup. Since July 1st, Seattle ranks 25th in MLB with an 86 wRC+.
The reality is that when the two "stars" in a lineup play like replacement-level bats, there will be some struggles. I'm looking at you, Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez.
Raleigh has been among the worst hitters in MLB this year, and his wRC+ since July is 64. Rodriguez has been solid. A 109 wRC+ in a 23-game stretch is fine, but Seattle can't afford "fine" from its highest-paid player.
Randy Arozarena has carried this Mariners offense of late. He has eight homers in his last 34 games and one in back-to-back games. Also, Cole Young and Josh Naylor are hitting better, but facing a tough lefty could neutralize them.
The Yankees have won four of their last five games. They even scored 10+ runs on Wednesday, which hadn't happened in nearly two months. Now, they'll eye down a sweep in Wednesday's series finale.
The strength of this Yankees squad is pitching. We can talk about Cam Schlittler and Gerrit Cole all day, but don't forget about Max Fried.
In four starts since returning from the injured list, Fried looks even better than before. He struck out 7+ batters just once in his first 10 starts this year and reached that marker in three of his last four.
This year, Fried owns a 2.88 ERA with an even more impressive 2.37 xERA and 2.39 FIP. The craziest stat of all? Fried has a 0.11 HR/9, meaning he's given up ONE home run in 81 1/3 innings this year.
He could absolutely dominate this shaky Mariners lineup with his ability to put the ball on the ground. They have a home-run-or-bust tendency, and nobody is better than Fried at keeping the ball in the yard.
We have a two-month sample of the Yankees being a shoddy offensive team. That'll happen without Aaron Judge in the lineup. They rank 26th in MLB with an 85 wRC+ since July.
The numbers that really magnify the Yankees' struggles are their league-worst 27% strikeout rate and 8% walk rate, which is 23rd. When the Yankees are right, they're among the best at drawing walks.
The calculus changes a bit if Spencer Jones and Trent Grisham contribute like they did on Wednesday.
Jones cracked a pair of long doubles, and his strikeout rate has plummeted of late as he gets more playing time. Grisham hits at the top of the lineup, and his production is even more vital with Ben Rice struggling. He hit three homers in his last three games.
Still, I won't let one good game alter my view on this Yankees lineup. They don't have Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, or Cody Bellinger. Of course, there will be some tough times.

Mariners vs Yankees Pick, Betting Analysis
I'm a bit shocked to see this total sitting at 8. I expected it to be 7 at open, but perhaps the barrage of scoring on Wednesday changed things a bit.
The facts are that two of the 20 best pitchers in the AL will face off, and these two offenses have been among the worst in the league for months.
I expect a pitcher's duel here.
Pick: Under 7.5 (+100, BetMGM | Play to 7)
