Tigers vs Giants MLB Betting Preview
Welcome back, Jackson Jobe! The former top-10 prospect is returning to the Tigers' rotation at the perfect time after they traded CY Young winner Tarik Skubal and reliable mid-rotation arm Casey Mize.
Jobe underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the last 13 months. He threw 69 pitches in his final rehab outing, so expect him to stay in the 75-pitch range in his season debut.
Jobe flashed his explosive velocity in his rehab outings, regularly sitting in the high 90s and topping out at 100 mph. That shouldn’t be a huge surprise, as pure stuff usually comes before command for pitchers returning from Tommy John.
Despite struggling on the mound, the Tigers remain in the playoff race thanks to their dominant offense.
Since the calendar flipped to July, the Tigers rank fourth with a 118 wRC+. They're a team with a ton of firepower. Four hitters in the Tigers lineup have drilled 5+ homers in their last 30 games (Spencer Torkelson, Riley Greene, Dillon Dingler and Kevin McGonigle).
Plus, nine hitters have a wRC+ better than 100 in that stretch. Not all nine will play simultaneously, but that's still a nice boost.
AJ Hinch will need his bullpen to perform well. I expect Tyler Holton to throw a bit since he can pitch two innings if needed. But Hinch will need the good versions of Kyle Finnegan and Kenley Jansen to preserve a potential lead.
The Giants are easily one of the least inspiring teams. They don't have much young talent; their pitching staff is a train wreck after dealing Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle, and several key bullpen cogs.
Taking the ball for San Francisco is Landen Roupp, who's been a bit unlucky this year. He owns a 4.34 ERA, but his 3.59 xERA and 3.48 FIP show just how unlucky he's been.
Roupp is one of the premier soft-contact artists in baseball. He ranks in the 90th percentile or better in hard-hit, barrel, and ground-ball rate. Where he gets in trouble is when he walks hitters (3.95 BB/9) and then gets BABIP'd. Before you know it, Roupp gives up a few runs without a hard-hit ball.
I have very little faith in this Giants offense. If you flip to the start of July, four of the nine regular starters from then are either injured or traded (Matt Chapman, Casey Schmitt, Luis Arraez, and Heliot Ramos).
Now, it's Rafael Devers, Jung Ho-Lee, Bryce Eldridge, a poor-performing Willy Adames, and a bunch of question marks. Sure, some players like Daniel Susac or Drew Gilbert can get hot, but on the whole, this lineup lacks talent.
Tigers vs Giants Pick, Betting Analysis
I mentioned the bullpen moves earlier, and they were pretty drastic. The closer of this club, Caleb Killian, went with the Phillies, and their best overall reliever, Erik Miller, went to the Red Sox.
So, Roupp will need to provide length; otherwise, this very inexperienced Giants bullpen could pitch a lot.
The line is even, and I have to take Detroit at -110 here. Roupp deserves respect, but his walk issues could sting him against a Tigers lineup that will take their walks.
